Description
Akatsuki is a supporting character who first appears in the second anime series, Ojamajo Doremi Sharp. He is a young wizard and the prince of the magical world, serving as the leader of a wizard boy band known as FLAT4. His primary role in the story is as a romantic interest for the protagonist, Doremi Harukaze, and as an initial antagonist whose loyalties shift over time.
In his debut season, Akatsuki is hired by the villain Oyajide to assist in a plot to kidnap the infant witch Hana. To accomplish this, he approaches Doremi under false pretenses, feigning affection for her in order to gain the trust of her group of witch apprentices. He flirts with Doremi and takes her on dates, successfully making her believe he is a charming and interested suitor. However, as he spends more time with Doremi and witnesses her innocent and compassionate nature, his deceptive feelings begin to transform into genuine affection. This internal conflict leads to his redemption, and he ultimately abandons the kidnapping scheme to side with the heroines, helping them confront Oyajide and his forces.
Akatsuki is defined by his cool and charming demeanor, which makes him immediately popular and seemingly princely in Doremi's eyes. Despite this composed exterior, he is genuinely fascinated by the human world and, like his friends, can become distracted by its pleasures, sometimes shirking his duties to explore and have fun. He has a notable interest in hero performances and video games, revealing a more boyish side to his personality. His key relationship is with Doremi, for whom he develops a sincere fondness that lasts beyond the events of the second season. This creates a love triangle dynamic with Doremi's childhood friend, Kotake Tetsuya.
Akatsuki reappears in the fourth season, Ojamajo Doremi Dokkan!, when FLAT4 comes to the human world on a study abroad trip. His feelings for Doremi are still present, and he resumes his rivalry with Kotake, even competing with him in a paper wrestling match for her attention. His development throughout the series shows his growth from a manipulative antagonist to a loyal ally and a persistent, if somewhat flawed, romantic figure. As a wizard, Akatsuki possesses innate magical abilities that do not require special items or spells to use, unlike the witch apprentices. His power is significant, and in later material set years after the anime, he is described as having grown into a great wizard capable of impressive feats such as constructing large buildings with magic.
