Description
Patricia Martin, commonly called Patty and sometimes Pa-san, is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed American student who comes to Japan as a first-year exchange student at Ryōō High School. She originally appeared in the Lucky Star drama CDs before being added to the manga and later to the anime, where she joins the same class as Kobayakawa Yutaka and Iwasaki Minami and works part-time alongside Konata Izumi at a cosplay cafe. While in Japan she lives as a homestay guest at the Izumi household. Her birthday is April 16 and her blood type is O.
Patty is one of the most openly energetic characters in the series, a genki girl whose enthusiasm rarely fades. She loves anime, manga, and otaku culture, and she has a pronounced interest in boys love. Because she learned Japanese largely from anime and manga, her speech is highly distinctive: she mixes English phrases, Japanese words, and her own invented expressions, and while her Japanese can sound odd, she is actually quite fluent and especially knowledgeable about otaku terminology. Her voice is styled in a high, Minnie Mouse-like manner. She is outgoing, eager to make friends, enjoys video games and competitions, and often tries to draw others into her interests.
Her main motivation is to immerse herself fully in Japanese otaku culture, which she approaches with an almost pilgrim-like devotion, attending events, cosplay activities, and doujinshi markets. In the story she serves as a supporting member of the main group, sharing a workplace with Konata, taking part in school events such as the cultural festival, and joining her friends in their hobbies and everyday routines.
Her most important relationship is with Konata Izumi, who acts as her otaku mentor and whose interests align closely with her own. With Yutaka, who lives under the same roof, she shares a warm, sisterly bond, often sweeping the quieter girl into her antics. Her classmate Minami provides a calmer contrast, and she forms a creative friendship with Tamura Hiyori, bonding over doujinshi and shared fujoshi sensibilities. Through these connections she becomes a natural part of the group's social circle.
Over the course of the series, Patty develops from a newcomer into a fully integrated member of the group, becoming deeply absorbed in Japanese otaku culture and strengthening her friendships. Her time in Japan leads her to intend to keep in contact with her friends through email even after she eventually returns to the United States. Her notable traits include her unconventional but effective Japanese, her expert command of otaku slang, her high-energy presence that enlivens group activities, her hands-on experience with cosplay gained through cafe work, and her competitive skill at video games. She is also self-conscious about her physical appearance, as she has the second largest bust among the female students after Miyuki, a fact that often embarrasses her.
