TV-Series
Description
Hakubi is a demon dog, specifically a ghost wolf, who serves as the faithful guardian and partner of Tokine Yukimura, having been bound to her family for centuries. His appearance is marked by his black fur and striking blue eyes, and he is always accompanied by light blue, cloud-like wisps of energy. He also wears a Green Seal, a marker of his bond and service.
In terms of personality, Hakubi is notably more easygoing and approachable than his counterpart, Madarao, who serves the rival Sumimura family. He often displays a derisive and teasing attitude toward the young kekkaishi Yoshimori Sumimura and his own rival, Madarao, frequently insulting them in a manner that provides comic relief. Despite his relaxed demeanor, he becomes completely serious and focused when a dangerous ayakashi, or demon, appears, prioritizing the task at hand and the protection of his master. He has a well-noted weakness for attractive women, which can easily distract him from his duties. His personality often reflects onto Tokine herself, and he shows a deep, caring affection for her, even once telling her that he loves her.
Hakubi’s primary motivation is the protection of Tokine and the successful execution of his duties as a kekkaishi’s partner. He has a strong sense of pride in his work and does not want to lose to Madarao when it comes to hunting ayakashi. He also has a fierce, predatory instinct, once stating that he would eat any demon that got too close to the sacred land of Karasumori. Within the story, his role is that of a seasoned guide and advisor to Tokine, offering her counsel and using his supernatural senses to support her in battle. He is less of a combatant and more of a skilled tracker, using his heightened sense of smell to locate hidden enemies, though his sense of smell is known to be slightly inferior to Madarao’s.
His most significant relationship is with his master, Tokine Yukimura, whom he affectionately calls honey. Their synergy is strong and effective, built on centuries of service and mutual trust. He also has a long and contentious history with Madarao; prior to serving the current generation, Hakubi served Tokimori Hazama and was present for the first sealing of Madarao. His relationship with Yoshimori is mostly antagonistic, as he frequently scolds the boy for his lack of speed and perceived slowness.
There is little indication of significant personal development or change for Hakubi throughout the series, as he is an ancient being whose personality and role are already firmly established. His consistency serves as a grounding element for the younger human characters. His notable abilities include a powerful sense of smell for tracking ayakashi and a form of regeneration. If his physical form takes too much damage or is destroyed, he will automatically return to the location where his main body is stored and re-emerge once he has fully regenerated.
