TV-Series
Description
Maria is a central character in Hayate the Combat Butler. She serves as Nagi Sanzenin’s personal maid and former home tutor within the vast Sanzenin household. Her background is marked by mystery: she is an orphan who was found as an infant next to a statue of the Virgin Mary at a church, which is how she received her name. No last name is known for her, and her birthday, December 24, was assigned as the day she was discovered. She is seventeen years old.

Maria’s personality is defined by a striking maturity that far exceeds her age, often causing those around her to speak of her as if she is older, a fact she strongly dislikes. Her frequent retort to such assumptions is that she is still a fresh seventeen-year-old. She possesses the most common sense of any character in the series and is highly intelligent, having served as the youngest student council president at Hakuo Academy at the age of ten. Despite this sharpness, her sense of the value of money is surprisingly poor, similar to Nagi’s, and she has little knowledge of what ordinary life is like outside of wealth, such as being unaware that trains other than bullet trains exist. She is somewhat devious and enjoys teasing people, but is also kind and deeply caring. Her primary fear is of cockroaches, which she calls the dark life-form of the kitchen, and she is notably bad at disguises, always being recognized instantly when she tries to spy.

Her motivations center on protecting and caring for Nagi, whom she has watched over since childhood. She began as Nagi’s tutor and later became her sole maid, a position Nagi granted because Maria is one of the few people smarter than her. Maria acts as a surrogate older sister and maternal figure to Nagi, being the only person who truly understands the dynamic between Nagi and Hayate. She is the de facto authority in the Sanzenin manor, commanding respect and fear from everyone from the head butler to the secret police, who all obey or fear her.

In the story, Maria takes on the role of the caretaker and manager of the household, constantly cleaning up the messes caused by the other characters. She shares a close, supportive bond with Nagi and a complex, observant relationship with Hayate, having seen him in embarrassing situations multiple times. She notices the effect Hayate has on other girls, but struggles to determine her own feelings toward him due to a lack of personal experience with romantic attraction. Throughout the series, she remains a steady, grounding presence, though her own development involves slowly confronting her limited understanding of normal life and her own emotions.

Notable abilities include exceptional intelligence and academic achievement, proficiency in general housework, skill in all kinds of games from video games to chess and billiards, and capability in self-defense techniques when necessary. She is also a talented singer. However, her fear of cockroaches and inability to convincingly disguise herself stand as her main weaknesses.
