Description
Ayumu Nishizawa is a girl from Hayate Ayasaki's previous high school, where she was his classmate before his life took a drastic turn. Born on May 15th, she is 16 years old, stands 162 centimeters tall, and has dark hair usually tied in two pigtails with olive green eyes.
Her personality is defined by a cheerful, energetic, and remarkably resilient nature. She is best known for her constant eating; she is almost always seen consuming something yet never gains weight or suffers any ill effects. This trait became a running gag, especially in the first anime season, where she would appear briefly in nearly every episode, often doing something unrelated to the main plot but always involving food. Despite her generally easygoing demeanor, she possesses a fierce and protective side, violently lashing out at anyone who badmouths her or Hayate, including a teacher who insulted him.
Ayumu's central motivation is her longstanding romantic feelings for Hayate, which began after he saved her from a bicycle crash. Unlike many other characters, she gathers the courage to directly confess her love to him, a significant act that marks her as distinct among the series' heroines. However, Hayate rejects her confession after being reminded of his young mistress, Nagi Sanzenin. Undeterred by this setback, Ayumu continues to pursue her feelings, determined to find a way to win his heart.
Her role in the story is primarily as a major supporting character and a romantic rival to Nagi. Her first meeting with Nagi is a memorable metaphorical confrontation where Nagi is represented by a dragon and Ayumu by a hamster, a symbol that sticks with her throughout the series. Despite this initial rivalry, their relationship evolves into a genuine, if sometimes awkward, friendship. Ayumu has shown great kindness to Nagi, allowing the wealthy heiress to stay at her modest home to learn about "ordinary" life and even bravely standing up to protect her from danger. She insists on treating Nagi as a normal friend, paying for things out of her own pocket despite Nagi's immense wealth. Her friendships also extend to other characters, most notably Hinagiku Katsura, with whom she forms a supportive bond, even making a pact to encourage each other in their respective romantic pursuits of Hayate.
Over the course of the series, Ayumu shows development from a shy girl who admired Hayate from afar to someone who actively takes charge of her feelings. She is not afraid to insert herself into his new life as a butler, taking a part-time job at a café where he works and later moving into Nagi's boarding house, the Violet Mansion, as a tenant to stay close to him. Her storylines often balance her romantic aspirations with her down-to-earth concerns, such as studying for exams, working part-time jobs, and managing her finances, making her a relatable figure. Her resilience is a key trait; whether losing a karaoke challenge to Nagi or being metaphorically eaten by a dragon, she always vows to come back stronger.
While she possesses no supernatural combat abilities like Hayate or Hinagiku, her notable abilities lie in her everyday life. Her hobbies include playing the guitar, watching movies, and listening to music. She is also a hard worker, holding down part-time jobs to support herself, demonstrating a practical and determined spirit that complements her romantic aspirations. Her most unique trait, however, remains her incredible metabolism, allowing her to eat constantly without consequence.
