Description
Hinagiku Katsura is a central character in the story, serving as the student council president of Hakuo Academy, the captain of its kendo club, and an unofficial school idol admired by both male and female students alike.

Her background shares a surprising similarity with the protagonist, Hayate Ayasaki. Before her sixth birthday, Hinagiku and her older sister, Yukiji, were abandoned by their biological parents, who left them with an enormous debt of 80 million yen. Yukiji managed to pay off the debt through dubious means, and the two sisters were subsequently adopted by Mr. Katsura, Yukiji's former elementary school teacher, and his wife. This traumatic early life is a key part of her character, and it is this shared experience of pain and hardship that allows her to feel an instant connection with Hayate when they first meet.

In terms of personality, Hinagiku is known for being highly capable, intelligent, and hardworking. She is the top student at the prestigious Hakuo Academy, excelling in academics, sports, and her leadership duties without apparent effort, a fact that has earned her a genius-level intellect classification. However, beneath this composed and almost perfect exterior, she has the same feelings and insecurities as an average teenage girl. Her most famous and significant weakness is a severe case of acrophobia, an intense fear of heights that can leave her frozen in terror. Being in high places, such as an airplane, a helicopter, or even a tall building, causes her extreme distress. She is also noted to have a formidable and sometimes intimidating presence, which often makes other students wary of her despite their admiration.

Hinagiku's role in the story is multifaceted. Initially, she is a powerful and respected upperclassman who becomes an ally to Hayate and his young mistress, Nagi Sanzenin. She is often called upon to help in various situations, from combat to providing guidance or simple assistance. As the narrative progresses, her role evolves primarily into that of a primary love interest for Hayate. In a series filled with comedic misunderstandings and unspoken feelings, her romantic development is a major focus.

Her key relationships are central to the plot. Her most important relationship is with Hayate Ayasaki. She often expresses her affection through sharp teasing and occasional violence, a common trope in romantic comedies, but her feelings for him are genuine and deep. She fell in love with him at first sight when he helped her down from a tree after she had gotten stuck while trying to rescue a baby bird. Despite being a genius in all other areas, she is shy and insecure about confessing her love to him, and her pride often prevents her from being fully honest about her feelings. She shares a close but often strained relationship with her older sister, Yukiji, who works as a teacher at Hakuo Academy and is a heavy drinker, often leaving Hinagiku to feel responsible for her. She is also friends with Ayumu Nishizawa, with whom she shares a mutual, respectful understanding of their romantic interest in Hayate. Hinagiku also has a complex past with Athena Tennosu, another powerful character whom she initially admired but became estranged from after an incident involving a nickname that evoked painful memories for Athena.

Throughout the series, Hinagiku undergoes significant development. She learns to confront and eventually partially overcome her acrophobia during a climactic battle with the villain Aoi Himegami on the Hakuo Academy clock tower. She also matures emotionally, gradually moving from being simply a capable and admired leader to a young woman more in touch with her personal desires and vulnerabilities, particularly regarding her love for Hayate.

Notably, Hinagiku possesses a wide array of remarkable abilities. Beyond her genius-level intellect and academic prowess, she is an extraordinarily skilled martial artist and a master swordsman, specifically in the art of kendo, which she wields with devastating effectiveness. Her physical abilities are superhuman, ranking her as a top-tier fighter equal to or even surpassing Hayate in combat prowess for a period. She is initially armed with a simple shinai (bamboo sword) but later acquires two powerful enchanted blades. The first is Masamune, an ancient wooden sword from the Saginomiya family that can unlock a wielder's hidden potential and is effective against spirits and demons. This sword is eventually destroyed in battle. Her second and more powerful weapon is Shirosakura, a legendary crystal sword of justice that chooses its rightful owner. With Shirosakura, she gains the ability to fly and gains even greater power to combat supernatural threats. Her stamina is also immense, allowing her to compete in and win multiple strenuous athletic events in a single day without showing signs of fatigue.
