Description
Isumi Saginomiya is a young girl from the Saginomiya family, one of the wealthiest and most prestigious households in Japan. She is a close friend of Nagi Sanzenin and a recurring character in the story. Physically, Isumi is notably petite, standing at 144 cm tall. She has long, dark blue hair styled in a hime cut that reaches her hips, and matching dark blue eyes. Her most consistent and recognizable feature in terms of attire is her preference for traditional Japanese clothing, as she is almost always seen wearing a yukata or a kimono, often with a stole, paired with geta sandals and white tabi socks.

In personality, Isumi is soft-spoken, gentle, and kind, possessing a refined and old-fashioned demeanor that contrasts sharply with the more volatile and lazy nature of her best friend, Nagi. Unlike Nagi, Isumi is not lazy and is noted to be a good cook with an interest in traditional arts such as tea ceremony, calligraphy, and flower arrangement. Despite her quiet and timid exterior, she can become surprisingly forceful and obstinate when her abilities as an exorcist are questioned or when her pride is wounded. A significant part of her character involves a paradoxical combination of high intelligence and specific, profound weaknesses. While she is academically gifted, placing high in school examinations and being fluent in multiple languages, she is famously hopeless with modern technology, often declaring electronic devices like smartphones or vending machines to be broken simply because she does not understand how to operate them. Her most prominent and consistent character trait is her complete lack of a sense of direction, leading her to get lost constantly, sometimes on an international scale, as when she intended to stay home for a holiday but ended up in Las Vegas. This is not due to stupidity but rather a combination of her tendency to get distracted by her duties as an exorcist and a deep-seated, prideful stubbornness that prevents her from admitting she might be wrong. She also dislikes wearing modern clothes and getting wet.

Isumi serves as the spiritual center of the cast due to her role as a powerful exorcist and medium. Her primary motivation and role in the narrative are tied to her deep bond with Nagi, whom she considers her best friend. Their friendship was cemented in childhood when other children, including Sakuya Aizawa, laughed at Nagi's first amateur manga; Isumi alone took a genuine interest, asking how the story ended, a gesture that Nagi never forgot. This event established a deep emotional investment for Isumi in Nagi's happiness and her creative works, even spending nights worrying about the plights of characters in Nagi's stories. She is fiercely loyal and often acts to protect Nagi, even suppressing her own feelings to ensure her friend's happiness. Her spiritual powers are a major plot device, allowing her to sense, combat, and seal ghosts, demons, and other supernatural phenomena that others cannot perceive.

Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Nagi is the most important, characterized by mutual support and a shared, sometimes isolated, passion for manga. She also interacts frequently with Hayate Ayasaki, the butler. She met him when she asked him for directions, and their relationship has a unique dynamic; she is one of the few characters to have kissed him on the cheek, and he is often the key to restoring her powers, as her bloodline prophesies that the blood of an unlucky butler whose name starts with a certain character can replenish her strength. Another significant relationship is with Wataru Tachibana, who has a clear romantic interest in her. However, Isumi is almost entirely oblivious to his feelings, a fact that other characters frequently comment on, and she does not reciprocate his affections.

Isumi undergoes development primarily through the challenges she faces with her spiritual abilities. A notable arc involves her losing her powers, which forces her to rely on others and confront her own limitations. She eventually regains them after being placed in a situation where she must save Nagi. Another significant moment is when she overuses her powers, causing her signature dark blue hair to temporarily turn white. She also demonstrates growth in her role as an investigator of the supernatural, such as when she helps uncover the history of a mysterious coffin in the Violet Mansion or confronts powerful spirits. Her interactions with characters like Sakuya and Hinagiku during these arcs show her as a reliable, if eccentric, ally in battle and problem-solving.

Regarding notable abilities, Isumi possesses immense spiritual powers, considered the strongest in her clan, which she uses for exorcism and demon hunting. These powers allow her to perform feats such as sealing supernatural artifacts, banishing evil spirits, and even taming wild animals like bears. Her ability is so potent that she is virtually untouchable in combat unless taken by complete surprise. Despite these formidable strengths, her weaknesses are equally pronounced: her aforementioned lack of direction, her inability to use technology, and her struggle to follow fast conversations. She is also surprisingly sensitive about her competence, reacting with anger if anyone implies she is not a capable exorcist. This blend of immense power and profound, innocent flaws makes her a distinct and memorable character.
