Otose, whose real name is Terada Ayano, is the owner of the Otose Snack House and one of the most influential figures in the Kabuki District of Edo. She holds the position of one of the district's Four Devas, a group of powerful local leaders, and is widely known by the title Empress Otose. Her establishment occupies the ground floor of the building where the Yorozuya, the odd-jobs business run by Sakata Gintoki, is located, which also makes her the Yorozuya's landlady.
Her background is rooted in the Kabuki District, where she grew up and formed a close childhood friendship with Doromizu Jirochou, whom she constantly kept out of trouble and scolded for his misbehavior.
