Description
Kyūbee Yagyū is the sole heir and next head of the prestigious Yagyū family, a lineage that has served the shogun for generations. Though biologically female, she was raised as a male and trained as a samurai from early childhood. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and her father, Koshinori, chose not to remarry and instead decided to bring up Kyūbee as a boy to ensure the continuation of the family line. Her grandfather, Binbokusai, also participated in this upbringing. This unusual background shaped every aspect of her identity and personality.
As a young child, Kyūbee was a weak and timid crybaby, often protected by her childhood friend Shimura Tae. One day, when debt collectors came to harm Tae and her brother Shinpachi, Kyūbee intervened and lost her left eye in the process. From that moment on, she became deeply determined to grow strong enough to protect Tae, throwing herself into rigorous Yagyū-style swordsmanship training. The eye is permanently covered by an eyepatch, which has become a signature part of her appearance. She usually wears a ponytail and formal samurai attire.
Kyūbee possesses a strikingly cold and stoic demeanor, likely a result of her intense discipline and the pressure of being the family successor. However, this exterior conceals a more complex and gradually softening personality. She is profoundly devoted to Tae, with romantic feelings that go beyond simple friendship. During her initial appearance in the Yagyū arc, she attempted to forcibly make Tae her fiancée, clashing with the Yorozuya and the Shinsengumi. After that conflict, she settled into a more amicable friendship with Tae, though her love remains strong and she is fiercely protective. She has a reflexive, almost violent reaction to being touched by men, often throwing them over her shoulder without thinking.
Despite her serious front, Kyūbee has a pronounced naive and literal side, which makes her a natural source of deadpan comedy. She tends to take absurd statements at face value and becomes confused by everyday social situations. This earnestness, combined with her unwavering sense of duty, leads her into many ridiculous situations. Over time she has become a regular supporting character, appearing both in serious battle arcs and in purely comedic episodes. She also struggles with questions of gender identity – raised male but female by birth – and later in the story consciously decides to live simply as Yagyū Kyūbee, without strictly adhering to either masculinity or femininity. At times she dons feminine clothing and enjoys being a girl, but she also retains her pride as a swordsman.
Her most notable ability is her extraordinary swordsmanship. Called the greatest genius in the history of the Yagyū family, she can match or overwhelm veteran fighters such as Tōshirō Hijikata and Sakata Gintoki. Her style emphasizes blinding speed and precision, making her a formidable opponent in close combat. She also displays some business acumen, having started a small construction company with Tae.
Key relationships define her journey. Tae is her primary love interest and the person she wishes to protect above all. Shinpachi, Tae’s brother, is an ally, though he was initially hostile during the engagement attempt. Gintoki earned her respect after defeating her and helping her reexamine her life; they later become friendly rivals. Hijikata is another rival whom she can fight on equal footing. Kondō Isao, who also pursues Tae, is both a rival and a fellow sufferer of Tae’s cooking, leading to odd moments of camaraderie. Her overly protective retainer Tōjō Ayumu is a constant source of irritation, as he often tries to dress her in Gothic Lolita clothing, but she acknowledges his skill. Katsura Kotarō occasionally treats her as a rival for screen time, accusing her of stealing his character trope of the serious, long-haired airhead.
Throughout the series, Kyūbee develops from an arrogant, forceful antagonist into a loyal friend and a reliable, if eccentric, member of the cast. Her story touches on themes of identity, duty, and the courage to be oneself, all while maintaining the irreverent humor that defines Gintama. She remains one of the series’ most recognizable and beloved supporting characters.
