Description
Mei-Ling is a young girl from a rural village in China who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of D.Gray-man. She lives with her grandfather and initially works as a fortune teller, using a crystal ball to read the futures of the people in her community, which brings her joy as it makes others smile. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she encounters the exorcists Allen Walker and Lenalee Lee, who have come to her drought-stricken town searching for General Cross.

Mei-Ling possesses an unnamed piece of Innocence that resides within her crystal ball, granting her the ability to see future events. However, this power once frightened her when it activated uncontrollably during a reading. Because of this incident, she became afraid to touch her crystal ball. Her grandfather, worried for her well-being, decided to throw the ball into the local lake. This act caused the Innocence to go berserk, which in turn made the lake's waters recede and led to a severe drought plaguing the town.

In terms of personality, Mei-Ling is a caring and gentle person, deeply devoted to her village and the people she knows. She is also quite worrisome, particularly when it comes to the safety of her friends. After being informed about the nature of Innocence and the Akuma by Lenalee, she is initially terrified. She foresees a future filled with blood and violence for herself and, seeing the Black Order insignia from her visions, she runs away in fear, only to be captured by a Level 2 Akuma. After being rescued by Lenalee, she reconciles with her Innocence and makes the decision to become an exorcist, wanting to protect those she cares about.

Mei-Ling’s role in the story is as a central figure in the anime-only Crystal Girl arc. She travels with Allen and his companions toward a rendezvous with a Finder who would escort her to the Asian Branch of the Black Order. Throughout this journey, her precognitive ability proves to be a powerful asset in battles against the Akuma and the Noah agent Lulu Bell. She is able to predict enemy movements and incoming attacks, helping her allies fight more effectively. However, using her power comes with a significant cost, as it drains her energy considerably, making her weaker and more fatigued with each use.

Her key relationship is with Lenalee Lee, who serves as a mentor and a source of encouragement. Lenalee helps Mei-Ling come to terms with her power and supports her dream of becoming an exorcist. Mei-Ling also grows close to Allen, Lavi, and Krory during their travels. A significant part of her development involves overcoming her fear of her own abilities and finding the courage to fight, despite the violent futures she sees. She transitions from a frightened fortune teller to a determined girl ready to join the battle against the Millennium Earl.

Ultimately, Mei-Ling’s journey to become an exorcist is cut short. During a fierce battle with Lulu Bell, she is overwhelmed, and her Innocence is taken and destroyed by the Earl himself. This loss is devastating for her, as she had wanted nothing more than to become an exorcist. However, she survives the ordeal, and Allen notes that she is at least able to return to a normal, peaceful life with her grandfather, free from the constant danger that exorcists face.
