Description
The Earl of Millennium, also known as the Creator or Adam, serves as the primary antagonist and the patriarch of the Noah Family. Having existed for over seven thousand years, his origin traces back to the time of the Great Flood, where he is identified as the first disciple of Noah. His central role in the story involves leading the Noah Clan and his army of demons called Akuma in a war against humanity and the Black Order of Exorcists. The Earl's primary method of creating Akuma is to prey upon the grief of humans who have lost loved ones, offering to resurrect the dead. This process traps the summoned soul inside a mechanical corpse, turning it into a weapon that is forced to obey the Earl's commands.

In his standard appearance, the Earl is a grotesque and rotund figure of considerable height, resembling a caricature of a Victorian gentleman. He typically wears a large cape, a top hat that changes decoration with each encounter, and a pair of pince-nez spectacles that hide his eyes. His most defining feature is a massive, perpetual grin that remains fixed on his face. Beneath his hat, he hides a pair of devil-like horns. His skin is often depicted with a grey or pale hue, and his smile reveals a full set of teeth. He is rarely seen without Lero, a sentient golem that takes the form of a pink umbrella with a jack-o-lantern head, which can talk and serves as both a flying device and a weapon. The Earl is also capable of assuming a more human-like form, appearing as a tall, handsome, middle-aged man with dark hair and a slight beard, dressed in a more conventional suit. The character is notably sensitive about his weight in his standard form, insisting he is not fat despite his appearance.

The Earl exhibits a complex and contradictory personality that has shifted as the manga's story has progressed. He is most often seen as cheerful, eccentric, and almost playful, speaking in a friendly and loving manner that seems entirely unfitting for an entity of pure evil. In the manga, this is emphasized by his sentences often ending with a heart symbol. He acts like a jovial, if somewhat silly, uncle figure to the members of the Noah Family, showing particular affection and playfulness towards Road Kamelot. However, this lighthearted demeanor can vanish in an instant, revealing a being of pure, sadistic malice who is capable of casually toying with human lives and displaying terrifying rage when his plans are thwarted. In his more serious human form, he becomes far more somber, melancholic, and tired, often dropping the heart speech patterns entirely when discussing important matters.

The Earl's primary motivation is the destruction of humanity and Innocence, the substance used by Exorcists to fight him, though his personal reasons run much deeper. His most powerful driving force is an obsessive, love-struck desire to be with Nea D. Campbell, the 14th Noah, who currently resides within the protagonist, Allen Walker. Despite Nea attempting to kill him in the past, the Earl is desperate to have him back, chasing him relentlessly and breaking down in sorrow when confronted with his memory. He holds a deep and intense hatred for Mana Walker, whom he blames for the events of the past. This rage and sorrow cause him to lose control, his body morphing into nightmarish forms as he chants Nea's name. He has a deep-seated hatred for the substance Innocence.

The Earl's most significant relationship is with the protagonist, Allen Walker. He is obsessed with Allen because he is the host for Nea, whom the Earl wants to recover. He has frequently tried to capture Allen or persuade him to join the Noah Family. The Earl has a notable history with Mana Walker, Allen's adoptive father, which is central to the character's mystery. As the head of the Noah Family, his relationships with the other Noah include seeing Tyki Mikk and Sheryl Kamelot as adopted sons, and Road Kamelot as an adopted granddaughter. He shows a caring, if sometimes stern, side to them.

The character undergoes a profound transformation in the narrative when his true nature is revealed. The Millennium Earl was originally a single being who split into two halves, reincarnated as the twin brothers Mana D. Campbell and Nea D. Campbell. The current Earl is the result of the Mana half devouring or absorbing the Nea half. This leaves the Earl in a confused and fractured state, with his memory lost and his identity in flux. He suffers from this amnesia, becomes depressed when talking about Nea, and becomes furious and distressed when he is called by the name Mana, denying any connection to it despite being, in essence, Allen's adoptive father.

The Earl possesses a wide array of formidable abilities that make him a nearly unstoppable force. His most notable power is the creation of Akuma, which he produces using a massive Akuma Egg factory. He is also the creator of the Ark, a complex, dimension-traveling vessel that exists outside of space and time. In combat, the Earl is exceptionally powerful, able to move with deceptive speed and agility for his size and survive direct hits from Innocence without injury. He fights primarily using Lero, which can transform into a large black sword that acts as a direct counterpart to Allen Walker's sword of exorcism. He can also generate massive explosions of dark energy. He is an extremely skilled magician and sorcerer. Beyond combat, the Earl has mundane but surprising hobbies, including knitting, cooking, and a taste for crocodile meat and very sweet coffee.
