Description
General Cross Marian is a prominent character in the D.Gray-man narrative, recognized as one of the five Exorcist Generals of the Black Order and the formidable master to the protagonist, Allen Walker. Before becoming an Exorcist, he was a renowned scientist working for the Order, a background that contributes to his analytical and calculating nature. Physically, Cross is an imposing figure, standing tall at 195 centimeters with long, vibrant red hair and a distinctive mask that permanently covers the left side of his face, concealing it from view. His attire typically consists of dark, explorer-style clothing paired with a wide-brimmed black hat.
Cross possesses a notoriously abrasive and hedonistic personality. He is a self-indulgent womanizer with profound affections for wine, gambling, and beautiful things, often incurring enormous debts that he habitually leaves for others, most frequently his unfortunate apprentice, to repay. He is sardonic, crude, and demanding, with a sharp tongue and a general disregard for authority or the opinions of others, which has earned him a reputation for being truant and difficult to work with. Despite this harsh and seemingly uncaring exterior, particularly the brutal training methods he employs that leave Allen visibly terrified, there are underlying hints of a deeper, more strategic individual. His actions are often calculated, and he hides a keen intelligence behind a mask of shallow vanity. A subtle softness is occasionally revealed, particularly in his interactions with certain individuals like his apprentice, the brothel owner Anita, and the Exorcist Lenalee Lee.
Cross's role within the Black Order is complex and often operates on the fringes of the organization's direct command. Having ceased communication with headquarters for four years prior to the main story, he operates independently, hunting the Millennium Earl and his Akuma across the globe. His primary motivation appears rooted in a pact made with the 14th Noah, Nea D. Campbell. Before Nea's death, he tasked Cross with watching over his older brother, Mana Walker, promising that he would one day return. This promise binds Cross to both Mana and, eventually, Allen, as he reveals that Allen is the chosen host for the 14th Noah's memories and revival. His actions, however cruel they may seem, are ultimately aimed at forging Allen into a weapon strong enough to survive the destiny that awaits him. He demonstrates a unique ability to convert and command Akuma, making them serve his orders, a power that even the Millennium Earl views with concern.
The most significant relationship in Cross's life is with his apprentice, Allen Walker. He took the catatonic boy in after the tragic death of Mana Walker and trained him for four years in a manner that was psychologically and physically torturous, often forcing him into dangerous battles and leaving him to pay off his gambling debts. While their interactions are typically filled with insults and demands from Cross, this relationship is the narrative core that drives much of Allen's growth and his eventual understanding of his own origins. Cross also shares a bond with the wealthy Chinese brothel owner Anita, staying with her for a year and, despite his general demeanor, showing a genuine care for her.
Throughout the story, Cross is a mysterious and pivotal figure whose knowledge drives major plot revelations. He infiltrates the Noah's Ark to save Allen and single-handedly overwhelms the powerful Noah, Tyki Mikk, demonstrating his immense power. He later plays a crucial role in defending the Black Order's headquarters from an invasion of high-level Akuma. In a climactic revelation, he confirms to Allen that he is the host for the 14th Noah, explaining that the implanted memories will eventually erode his personality and that he must kill someone he loves upon his transformation. Following this confession, Cross is attacked in his room. A significant amount of his blood is found, along with his anti-Akuma weapon, Judgment, and his mask shattered by a bullet, but his body vanishes, leaving his ultimate fate ambiguous.
In terms of abilities, Cross Marian is exceptionally powerful, considered one of the strongest Exorcists in the Order. He is unique in that he wields two distinct types of Innocence simultaneously. His primary weapon is Judgment, an equipment-type Innocence that takes the form of a large revolver. He is a highly skilled marksman, able to fire in rapid succession with bullets that will not stop until they have struck their target. His second weapon is Grave of Maria, a parasitic-type Innocence belonging to a deceased female Exorcist. Through the use of taboo sorcery and necromancy, Cross controls her corpse to fight for him. Maria possesses powerful defensive and offensive abilities, including Magdala Curtain, which creates illusions to conceal allies, and Carte Garde, a mental manipulation technique that controls the movements of her targets by affecting their brainwaves. In addition to his Innocence, Cross is a skilled sorcerer, capable of casting binding spells and other magical feats, and his background as a scientist gives him a strategic and analytical edge in combat.
