TV-Series
Description
Cross Marian is a General of the Black Order and the master who trained the series' protagonist, Allen Walker. He is a tall man, standing at 195 centimeters, with long, vibrant red hair and eyes of a similar shade. A distinctive feature is the white mask he permanently wears over the right side of his face. He also sports a goatee and wire-framed glasses, and his typical attire includes an explorer-style coat and a wide-brimmed hat. Before his life as an exorcist, Cross was a renowned scientist, and he is the creator of the golden golem, Timcampy.
Cross Marian has a notoriously difficult and indulgent personality. He is a heavy drinker, an inveterate gambler, and a shameless womanizer who loves wine, money, and beautiful things. He is a demanding and gruff individual who is hard to please, often referring to his apprentice as his idiot pupil. He has a habit of accumulating massive debts and abandoning them for others, particularly Allen, to pay off. Despite this abrasive and seemingly carefree exterior, Cross is a deeply knowledgeable figure who operates on instinct and carries heavy secrets. His rough treatment of Allen often has a comedic undertone, but it also masks a genuine, if well-hidden, care for his student's well-being.
Cross's background is deeply intertwined with the central mysteries of the story. Before the main plot begins, he ceased communication with the Black Order for four years. In the past, he was close to the brothers Mana and Nea Walker, the latter of whom was a traitor to the Noah family known as the Fourteenth. Before Nea died, he entrusted Cross with a promise to look after Mana until the Fourteenth could return. This promise led Cross to eventually take in a young, traumatized Allen Walker after Mana's death, training him to become an exorcist. His primary motivation is tied to this promise, acting as a guardian of dangerous knowledge regarding the Noah and the true nature of Allen's existence as a host for the Fourteenth.
Within the story's narrative, Cross initially appears only in Allen's fearful flashbacks, which depict his harsh training methods. He makes his proper debut infiltrating the Noah's Ark, where he saves Allen and his friends from the Noah Tyki Mikk. As one of the five Generals of the Black Order, he is a figure of immense power and mystery, often acting on his own agenda. His key relationships are defined by his role as the reluctant guardian and teacher to Allen, his shared history with the Noah family, and his former connection to Mana Walker. He also has a noted fondness for Lenalee Lee, whom he considers a beautiful woman. The Black Order's leadership, particularly Malcolm C. Lvellie, deeply distrusts him and suspects he knows more than he reveals.
Cross Marian is the only exorcist known to command two Anti-Akuma weapons simultaneously. His primary weapon is Judgment, an equipment-type Innocence that takes the form of a large revolver. He can fire a devastating barrage of bullets from Judgment that relentlessly pursue their target. His second weapon is the Grave of Maria, a parasitic-type Innocence belonging to a deceased female exorcist. Using magic, Cross controls Maria's corpse, which can sing to create illusions (Magdala Curtain) or directly manipulate the brainwaves of a target to control their movements like a puppet (Carte Garde). In addition to his combat abilities, Cross possesses unique magical and scientific skills, including the power to convert Akuma and force them to serve him.
The character's development culminates in a major turning point in the story. After revealing to Allen the truth that his body is the vessel for the Fourteenth Noah, Cross is found in his room covered in a lethal amount of blood, seemingly dead. His body then vanishes, leaving behind only his mask and weapon, Judgment, with a bullet hole in it. This event leaves his ultimate fate ambiguous, though his influence continues to guide Allen from beyond through the messages and tools he left behind, such as the golem Timcampy.
