TV-Series
Description
Conte Millenaire, also known as the Millennium Earl, is the primary antagonist of D.Gray-man and the patriarch of the Noah Family. His existence predates the story by thousands of years, with his origins tracing back over 7000 years, making him an ancient and powerful sorcerer. He is also known as the First Disciple of Noah, and his own Noah name is Adam. His ultimate goal is to lead humanity to absolute destruction, mirroring the great flood of biblical times, and he seeks the Heart of Innocence to complete this mission.
In his standard appearance, Conte Millenaire resembles a grotesque caricature of a Victorian gentleman. He is a rotund figure with sickly gray skin, typically dressed in a large coat and a top hat which changes decorative style with each appearance. His most defining feature is an enormous, fixed smile that remains on his face even while he speaks or eats. His eyes are perpetually hidden behind a pair of quizzing glasses. He also carries a magical, talking pumpkin-headed umbrella named Lero, which serves as both a companion and a tool in combat. Later in the manga, it is revealed that he has two devil-like horns hidden beneath his hat. He possesses a secondary, human form that appears as a slim, handsome man in his late twenties or early thirties, with medium-length hair and a light beard, dressed in a sleeker version of his usual attire.
Despite his malevolent intentions, the Earl almost always acts in a cheerful, eccentric, and flamboyant manner, often ending his sentences with a heart. He speaks in an affectionate or cute way, which contrasts sharply with his role as a mass-murdering manipulator. Allen Walker notes that he always seems to be playing the fool, but this jovial exterior masks a deep-seated hatred for humanity and Innocence. He uses the grief of humans to trick them into summoning the souls of their deceased loved ones, which he then traps in mechanical bodies to create Akuma, his demonic army. However, he has shown a softer side, particularly towards the members of the Noah Family, acting in a paternal manner, especially towards Road Camelot. He is also capable of intense, terrifying fury, demonstrated when he lost control of the Ark and when confronting the truth about his past.
Conte Millenaire is the leader of the Noah Family, a group of individuals who possess the memories and genes of the biblical Noah. They serve as his generals in the war against the Exorcists. He is the master of the Akuma, which he creates to do his bidding and spread destruction. His most significant relationship in the backstory involves the 14th Noah, known as Nea Walker. Thirty-five years before the main story, Nea betrayed the family and tried to kill Conte Millenaire to usurp his position. The Earl was forced to kill Nea, an act that left him mentally scarred and unstable for years. This history is directly tied to Allen Walker, who is revealed to be Nea's reincarnation. The Earl is also linked to Mana Walker, Nea's brother, whom he blames for the tragedy and refuses to forgive. After learning Allen is Nea, he attempts to recruit him into the Noah Family rather than kill him, showing a capacity for forgiveness that has a distinct limit, as his hatred for Mana remains absolute.
As a sorcerer of immense power who has lived for millennia, Conte Millenaire commands a variety of abilities. His primary weapon is the Dark Matter, the power of the Noah, which he can wield with devastating effect. He also possesses a sword identical to the one used by Allen Walker, though with inverted colors. He is a master of ancient magic, capable of creating dimensional portals, generating massive explosions of energy, and commanding his entire army of Akuma. His umbrella, Lero, is a versatile tool that can be used for flight, as a weapon, and to channel his powers. He is also the creator of the Ark, a massive, reality-warping ship.
