Description
The character known as Ii Shenron, also referred to as Syn Shenron or the One-Star Dragon, is the final antagonist in the Dragon Ball GT anime series. He is the seventh and last of the Evil Shadow Dragons to appear, emerging from the accumulation of negative energy within the Dragon Balls caused by their overuse throughout the Dragon Ball storyline. Specifically, the wish that gave birth to Ii Shenron was the one made by Mr. Popo to revive all of the victims of Frieza and his forces on the planet Namek. The immense scale and complex nature of this wish generated a massive amount of negative energy, which is the reason for Ii Shenron standing as the most powerful of all the Shadow Dragons.
In his initial form, Ii Shenron is a large, humanoid dragon with white skin and dark blue sections on his abdomen and the back of his head. His eyes are small and red, and he has pointed ears with dragon-like whiskers. He possesses two large, fleshy horns on his head and long, sharp black spikes protruding from his shoulders, elbows, back, and knees. The corrupted One-Star Dragon Ball is visibly embedded on his forehead.
In terms of personality, Ii Shenron is considered the most cruel, sadistic, selfish, and purely evil of all the Shadow Dragons. He feels no compassion or pity for any form of life and takes great pleasure in the suffering of his opponents. A defining trait is his tendency to place the blame for his own existence onto the heroes, particularly Goku, whom he constantly reminds is responsible for creating the Shadow Dragons through the repeated use of the Dragon Balls. Unlike some of his predecessors, Ii Shenron has no interest in fighting a fair match or seeking a worthy opponent. He is underhanded, willing to use sneak attacks and will not wait for an injured enemy to recover. His pride and arrogance are immense when he holds the upper hand, but he can also be driven to fear and desperation when confronted with a foe stronger than himself, as seen in his final moments before his destruction. His singular motivation is the complete and total destruction of the universe, acting as a dragon of absolute ruin.
Within the story of Dragon Ball GT, Ii Shenron makes his first appearance immediately after the defeat of Eis Shenron. He immediately kills his fellow Shadow Dragon, Nuova Shenron, for showing mercy to Goku. He then battles a blinded Super Saiyan 4 Goku and easily dominates him, proving immune to even point-blank energy attacks. After a brief confrontation with the other Z-Fighters, including Uub, Goku recovers and returns to the fight, initially overwhelming Ii Shenron. In a desperate act, Ii Shenron uses his secret ability and absorbs all seven of the corrupted Dragon Balls into his body, transforming into a more powerful, larger form known as Omega Shenron, or Super Ii Shenron. In this state, the Dragon Balls are displayed on his chest, and he gains access to the unique powers and abilities of all the other Evil Shadow Dragons.
Key relationships for Ii Shenron are primarily adversarial. His central opposition is to Goku and Vegeta. He is powerful enough to easily defeat both warriors even in their Super Saiyan 4 states, forcing them to fuse into the immensely powerful Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Even in his Omega form, Ii Shenron is outclassed by Gogeta, who toys with him and deals a devastating blow that forces him to spit up the Dragon Balls and revert to his weaker Syn Shenron state. However, the fusion ends before Gogeta can deliver the final blow. The dragon also has a significant relationship with his brother, Nuova Shenron, whom he betrays and kills, only to later be confronted by his spirit.
Throughout the final battle, Ii Shenron demonstrates notable development in his character. While initially supremely confident and arrogant, he learns to fear his opponents after being overpowered by Gogeta. His pride is ultimately shattered when he realizes he cannot stop Goku's Universal Spirit Bomb, reducing him to futile pleas for mercy before his final destruction.
