Description
In the Dragon Ball GT anime series, which continues the story after the conclusion of Dragon Ball Z, the adult Son Goku is depicted at the age of fifty-two. At this stage, he has settled into a period of relative peace, though his Saiyan biology means he has aged very slowly and remains in peak physical condition. He is depicted as a tall, muscular man with his characteristic spiky black hair, standing approximately 1.79 meters tall. A notable physical trait at the beginning of the series is the absence of his Saiyan tail, a feature he had lost long ago.

Despite his advanced years, Goku’s personality remains defined by an pure-hearted and cheerful nature, a love for eating, and an all-consuming passion for fighting and self-improvement. His innate kindness and lack of malice are so profound that he retains the ability to ride the Kinto Un, or Flying Nimbus, a cloud that only those with a completely pure heart can mount. However, this innocence is balanced by a level of naivety and an obliviousness to social conventions, which often leads to humorous situations, particularly with his wife, Chi-Chi. He is not a traditional hero driven by a grand sense of duty, but rather a martial artist who instinctively rises to protect his friends and the Earth when challenged by powerful opponents.

The primary catalyst for Goku’s role in Dragon Ball GT is an accident involving the Black Star Dragon Balls. A wish made by Emperor Pilaf inadvertently reverts Goku to the physical form of a child, complete with his tail regrowing. While this reduces his raw power and stamina, his fighting skill and techniques remain intact. The plot forces him to venture across the galaxy with his granddaughter, Pan, and Trunks to retrieve the scattered Black Star Dragon Balls, which will cause Earth's destruction if not recovered within a year. This mission frames his character arc, forcing him into an active, adventurous role reminiscent of his childhood, while carrying the immense experience of a seasoned warrior.

Key relationships define his journey. His dynamic with his granddaughter Pan, who is headstrong and eager to prove herself, is central. Goku acts as both a reluctant guardian and a mentor, though his own youthful appearance and reckless nature often make them feel like equals. His enduring rivalry and friendship with Vegeta continues to be a cornerstone of the story; Vegeta remains one of the few individuals who can challenge Goku and push him to new heights. His family ties to his sons, Gohan and Goten, and his wife Chi-Chi are present, but his adventures take him away from domestic life for most of the series.

Goku undergoes significant development in Dragon Ball GT, primarily through the acquisition of new power. The regrowth of his tail allows him to tap into the primal Ozaru, or Great Ape, form once more. By mastering this rampaging golden great ape state and regaining conscious control, he achieves the legendary Super Saiyan 4 transformation. This form returns him to an adult physique, covering his body in red fur and giving him a more primal, intense appearance, and it represents a pinnacle of Saiyan evolution that blends the power of the Ozaru with the control of a Super Saiyan. He later learns to combine this form with Fusion, merging with Vegeta to create Gogeta.

His journey concludes with the Shadow Dragon arc, where he faces the ultimate consequence of the Dragon Balls' overuse. In a moment of profound acceptance, Goku leaves with the original Shenron to merge with the Dragon Balls, effectively sacrificing his presence in the mortal world to cleanse them of negative energy. His final goodbye to his friends and family is a poignant, silent departure, showing his growth from a simple fighter to a selfless guardian of the universe. One hundred years later, he is seen watching over his distant descendants from beyond, a legendary figure whose spirit endures.

Goku’s notable abilities in this series are extensive. He retains all his classic techniques, such as the Kamehameha, the Spirit Bomb, and Instant Transmission, which allows him to teleport by locking onto a ki signature. In his child form, he utilizes the Nyoibo, or Power Pole, a weapon from his youth that can extend great distances. The pinnacle of his power in GT is Super Saiyan 4, which grants him immense strength, speed, and a unique set of abilities, including the 10x Kamehameha and the Dragon Fist, a devastating attack that manifests the energy of a golden dragon to pierce his opponent. In this state, his fighting instincts become so refined that he can react to opponents without visual confirmation, his body moving purely on instinct, a testament to his mastery of combat.
