Description
Mai Tokiha is a sixteen-year-old first-year high school student who becomes the central protagonist of the My-HiME narrative. She is a self-reliant and hardworking young woman, characterized by her short red hair and a notably large bust, but her most defining traits are her fierce independence and her deep-seated reluctance to share her personal burdens with others. This tendency to internalize her struggles stems from a tragic childhood event that left her with a profound sense of responsibility for her younger brother, Takumi. As a child, Mai briefly took her eyes off Takumi near a river, leading to him falling into the water. Her mother dove in to save him, an act that resulted in the mother's eventual death. In her final moments, she entrusted Mai with the care of her brother, an obligation that has since guided Mai's every major life decision and instilled in her a powerful sense of guilt and duty. Beyond this, her hobbies include working multiple part-time jobs to support herself and her brother, whose fragile health requires expensive medical care.

Mai's personality is a complex mix of outward strength and inner vulnerability. To the outside world, she presents as a kind, polite, and patient individual, though she can display a sharp tongue and a short temper, especially when teased by her eventual love interest, Yuuichi Tate. This dynamic creates a classic love-hate relationship, particularly in the early stages of her time at Fuuka Academy. Despite her warm exterior, she is hesitant to form deep emotional attachments, fearing the potential loss that comes with them. This emotional armor is slowly chipped away as she is drawn into the conflict of the HiME, revealing a deeply caring person who feels a powerful need to protect not only her brother but also her growing circle of friends. She is often called the "big sister" of the group, a role she naturally assumes, particularly with the feral and childlike Mikoto Minagi, who becomes her roommate and an important figure in her life.

Mai's primary motivation throughout the story is the well-being and safety of her younger brother, Takumi. Her goal to earn a scholarship for his medical treatment is the reason she transfers to the prestigious Fuuka Academy. When she discovers her powers as a HiME, she is initially reluctant to engage in combat, preferring to live a normal school life. However, her protective instincts quickly override her hesitation when those she cares about are threatened. As the story progresses, her motivations expand beyond just Takumi. She becomes driven to protect her new friends from the monstrous Orphans and, later, from the tragic HiME festival itself, which forces the girls to fight each other, with the lives of their most cherished people at stake. This conflict places her in a painful position, as she tries to stop the fighting without losing anyone dear to her, forcing her to confront her greatest fear of abandonment and loss.

In the grander narrative, Mai is a key player and eventually one of the strongest HiME. She enters the story as a newly arrived transfer student who inadvertently awakens her powers during a battle on a ferry. Her role quickly evolves from a reluctant fighter into a central pillar of the group, reluctantly teaming up with the aloof Natsuki Kuga and the energetic Mikoto Minagi to combat the Orphans that threaten the academy. Her immense power, channeled through her Child Kagutsuchi, makes her a primary target for both the antagonistic Searrs Foundation and the manipulative Nagi, who orchestrates the HiME festival. As the festival escalates and the HiME are forced into lethal combat, Mai finds herself as one of the last remaining fighters, ultimately forced to confront the Obsidian Lord to end the cycle of violence and save her friends and brother.

Key relationships profoundly shape her character arc. Her bond with her brother Takumi is the foundation of her identity, though her overprotectiveness can be smothering. Her relationship with Yuuichi Tate begins with bickering and misunderstanding but deepens into a romantic connection, forcing her to confront her fear of losing someone precious. The innocent and possessive affection of Mikoto Minagi, who often buries her face in Mai's chest for comfort, softens Mai's guarded nature, and she becomes a surrogate guardian for the younger girl. Conversely, her relationship with Natsuki Kuga starts with rivalry and mutual distrust but grows into a deep and steadfast friendship based on shared burdens and a mutual desire to stop the HiME festival. Her entanglement with the older, mysterious Reito Kanzaki also serves as a point of emotional confusion, representing a potential, safer path away from the chaotic life of a HiME. A running gag involving Mai is her exceptional cooking ability, which frequently draws people to her and serves as a subtle expression of her nurturing personality.

Mai undergoes significant development across the story. Initially driven solely by responsibility and guilt, she learns to accept help and support from others, shedding her fierce independence in favor of genuine interdependence. She moves from denying her own feelings to protect others to embracing her love for Yuuichi and her friends as a source of strength. When tragedy strikes and she appears to lose those dearest to her, she descends into despair but ultimately finds the will to fight, not out of obligation, but out of love and a desire to protect what remains. Her final confrontation requires her to let go of her guilt and accept her own worth, culminating in a resolution that frees her from the chains of her past.

As a HiME, Mai possesses formidable abilities centered on the element of fire. Her Element takes the form of four large golden rings, each set with magatama beads, that float around her wrists and ankles. These rings grant her the power of flight and allow her to manipulate flames for various attacks. They can also generate a powerful barrier capable of deflecting missiles and other potent assaults. Her HiME mark is located on her right breast, and she is associated with the Cancer zodiac sign. Her Child, the physical manifestation of her power, is Kagutsuchi, a colossal dragon-like creature of immense destructive capability. Kagutsuchi can unleash devastating fireballs and laser-like thermal blasts. The creature is also deeply connected to the phoenix legend, as it can be reborn from fire, making it seemingly unkillable. Kagutsuchi has a jet mode for high-speed travel and is capable of melee combat. A large mystical sword, the Sword of Sealing, is embedded in Kagutsuchi's head, acting as a power limiter placed by the Obsidian Lord. When this seal is removed or broken, Kagutsuchi's full, world-ending power is unleashed, making it by far the strongest of all Children. The name Kagutsuchi comes from the Japanese god of fire, and the sword in its head is a direct reference to the myth where the god Izanagi decapitated the fire deity for burning his mother to death. The death of a HiME's Child is directly linked to the death of the person they cherish most, which adds a layer of immense personal stakes to every battle Mai fights.
