Description
Haruka Suzushiro is a student at Fuuka Academy and a prominent member of its student council, where she serves as the head of the executive committee. She is characterized by a hot-blooded and justice-oriented personality, with a strong dislike for dishonesty and roundabout behavior. Haruka is known for her straightforward and aggressive manner, often acting on her convictions without hesitation and pursuing her goals with relentless energy. Despite her serious commitment to maintaining order and discipline within the school, she has a comedic tendency to mispronounce or misspell words, which adds a lighter aspect to her character. Her favorite phrase is said to be "public and open" reflecting her belief in fairness.
Within the story, Haruka is not a HiME. Despite this, she demonstrates extraordinary physical capabilities, including superhuman strength that allows her to briefly fight against trained soldiers and a remarkable endurance that enables her to stay awake for days. Her primary motivation stems from a deep-seated rivalry with Shizuru Fujino, the student council president. This rivalry originates from a student council election where Shizuru won by a landslide, securing 817 votes to Haruka's 12, a defeat that Haruka resents deeply. She frequently refers to Shizuru with the derogatory nickname "bubuzuke woman," a reference to Kyoto-style rice tea.
Haruka's most significant relationship is with Yukino Kikukawa, her best friend and constant companion. Haruka is fiercely protective of the more reserved Yukino, and the two share a deep bond. In a pivotal turn of events, Haruka and Yukino witness Shizuru kissing a sleeping Natsuki Kuga. When Shizuru discovers them, a confrontation ensues. Although Haruka physically confronts Shizuru, she is unable to defeat her. Because Yukino loves Haruka more than anyone else, an attack on Haruka's Child leads to her own disappearance as Yukino's most important person. In her final moments before fading away, Haruka comforts a distraught Yukino, giving her her student council badge. She is later resurrected along with the other vanished characters and appears before Yukino in a comedic fashion. At the end of the series, she passes her position on the student council to Yukino.
In the manga adaptation of My-HiME, Haruka's role is significantly different, as she is depicted as a HiME. Her Element is a massive mace or spiked club, which she wields to inflict heavy damage on her enemies. Her Child is a large, grotesque sea creature named Koumokuten. In this version, she and Yukino fight as a perfectly balanced duo; Haruka focuses on powerful offensive attacks while Yukino manages defense. They are even capable of combining their Childs into a single being that can fire a highly destructive laser.
