Description
Haruka Suzushiro is a student at Fuuka Academy and serves as the head of the student council's executive committee. Her background at the school is marked by a significant political defeat, as she ran for student council president against the popular and elegant Shizuru Fujino. Due to what is described as a failed campaign strategy, Haruka lost the election by a landslide, receiving only twelve votes to Shizuru's eight hundred and seventeen. Following this loss, she joined the student council and created the executive committee, where she continues to work with a strong sense of duty.
Haruka has a passionate and straightforward personality. She is a hot-blooded girl who despises dishonesty and believes in acting on her convictions without hesitation. She has a powerful sense of justice and views it as her personal mission to maintain peace, order, and proper discipline within the school, vowing never to forgive those who disrupt the campus's harmony. Her catchphrase is the word "fair and square" or "公明正大," which translates to principles of honesty and righteousness. Despite her fierce exterior, she is a very dedicated friend who takes her responsibilities seriously.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to uphold the standards of the academy, though this often becomes entangled in her intense and one-sided rivalry with Shizuru Fujino. Haruka deeply resents Shizuru's laid-back attitude and seemingly effortless competence, privately calling her a "Kyoto tea-rice woman," a nickname for someone pretentious or overly refined. She constantly attempts to prove that Shizuru is an incompetent leader, but these efforts typically backfire due to Shizuru's calm and teasing nature, often causing Haruka to lose her temper and become impulsive. Another recurring aspect of her personality is a tendency to misuse or mispronounce complicated words, a trait for which she is frequently and quietly corrected by her close friend, Yukino Kikukawa.
Within the story's structure, Haruka serves as a comic foil to the more composed学生会 leadership while also demonstrating unexpected bravery. When the conflict among the HiMEs escalates, she displays a remarkable, almost superhuman level of physical strength and endurance, capable of fighting off trained soldiers and staying awake for days at a time. Her most pivotal moment occurs when she goes with Yukino to investigate Shizuru's suspicious behavior. Upon discovering Shizuru kissing the sleeping Natsuki Kuga, Haruka is disgusted by the act and confronts her directly. This confrontation leads to a fatal clash with Shizuru's Child, resulting in Haruka's death. However, her final act is not one of fear; she headbutts Shizuru and uses her last moments to reassure the distraught Yukino, giving her a personal token before she disappears.
The most significant relationship in Haruka's life is with Yukino Kikukawa. Yukino is her longtime friend and constant companion, who greatly admires Haruka and acts as a calm anchor to her explosive nature. In the anime, Haruka is not a HiME herself, but her bond with Yukino defines her role in the climax; because Haruka is the person Yukino cares about most, the destruction of Yukino's Child directly kills Haruka. This dynamic is reversed in the manga continuity, where Haruka is a powerful HiME and Yukino serves as her Key, allowing her to summon a massive, grotesque sea creature Child named Koumokuten or "光默天," which is associated with the deity of knowledge and sight. In both versions of the manga, their partnership creates a balanced duo, with Haruka focusing on aggressive physical attacks while Yukino handles defense or support.
Haruka's development throughout the anime is subtle but poignant. She begins as a loud, somewhat ineffective bureaucrat obsessed with rules and her rivalry with Shizuru. By the story's end, her true nature as a fiercely loyal and brave individual comes to the forefront, willing to sacrifice herself for her friend. After being resurrected by Mashiro, she returns to her usual comedic self, ultimately passing her student council position to Yukino (with a characteristic spelling error) before the series concludes. Her notable abilities vary by medium. In the anime, she possesses no supernatural HiME powers but wields an almost cartoonish level of physical strength, such as carrying a giant fish or throwing a spaceship. In the manga, her Element is a large spiked ball and chain or a massive hammer, which she uses to inflict heavy damage on her enemies.
