Description
Alessandro XVIII, known formally as His Holiness, is the 399th Pope of Rome in the anime Trinity Blood. He is the son of the previous pope, Gregorio XXX, and a woman from an old aristocratic Roman family. He did not seek the position for himself. After his father's death, his older half-siblings, Cardinal Caterina Sforza and Cardinal Francesco di Medici, maneuvered to place him on the papal throne, bypassing their uncle, Archbishop Alfonso d'Este. Consequently, Alessandro became pope at a very young age.

In terms of personality, Alessandro is characterized as a nervous and easily frightened teenager. He notably suffers from ligyrophobia, an intense fear of loud noises, and cannot handle shouting, especially when it is directed at him. He is described as lacking conviction and confidence in himself, which makes him a puppet ruler in the early part of the story. Despite holding the highest position within the Vatican, he feels unable to make decisions on his own and constantly looks to his more forceful half-siblings for guidance, particularly his brother Francesco, whose will he often succumbs to. However, despite his timidity, he possesses a strong sense of kindness and gentleness, which forms the core of his character.

Alessandro's primary motivation is not personal ambition but a genuine desire to do what is right, though he initially lacks the strength to act on it. His role in the story is primarily as the symbolic leader of humanity and a figure caught in the political struggles between the Vatican's factions, represented by his siblings Caterina and Francesco. His key relationships are with these half-siblings. He is frequently manipulated by Francesco, who uses his position to push for aggressive policies against the Methuselah, while his sister Caterina seeks to protect him and advocate for a path of diplomacy and coexistence. He also has an uncle, Alfonso d'Este, whose resentment over losing the papacy becomes a central threat to Alessandro's reign.

The most significant turning point in Alessandro's development occurs when he is forced to seek refuge with the Methuselah in Albion after a kidnapping attempt. This experience serves to open his eyes, allowing him to learn that not all Methuselah are evil and that peaceful coexistence is possible. Through these trials, he gains a newfound sense of confidence and purpose in his leadership. By the end of the series, he is able to stand up on his own and pledges to direct his efforts toward creating a new world of peaceful coexistence between humans and the Methuselah. In terms of notable abilities, Alessandro does not possess any special combat skills or supernatural powers. His authority is purely political and symbolic, stemming entirely from his office as the Pope and the moral influence he gradually learns to wield.
