Description
Augusta Vradica is the reigning sovereign of the New Human Empire, a nation of long-lived beings known as Methuselah, and is a figure shrouded in centuries of legend and deliberate mystique. Known by titles such as the Empress of the Night and the Eternal Queen, she is the absolute and only ruler her empire has ever known, having founded it over eight hundred years before the main events of the story. Her true identity is Seth Nightroad, the youngest of the three Crusnik siblings and the sister of Abel Nightroad and Cain Knightlord.

Before the fall of human civilization, Seth was a genetically engineered superhuman and the head of the science department for the Red Mars project, a colonization initiative. During this time, she discovered the Crusnik and Methuselah bacilli. After a catastrophic war on Mars, she and her kind, now transformed into the vampiric Methuselah, returned to Earth. Following centuries of conflict known as the Dark Ages, Seth led the displaced Methuselah to Eastern Europe. There, she founded the New Human Empire with its capital in the ancient city of Byzantium, creating a sanctuary for her people and establishing a complex, fragile coexistence between the ruling Methuselah and their human subjects, whom she considers her children.

Her personality is a study in duality, reflecting the immense burden of her ancient lineage and her carefully maintained public image. To the vast majority of her court and subjects, she is a distant, almost mythical presence. She rules from behind a veil of shadow, using a mechanically altered voice to issue decrees, ensuring that none know her true face. This air of mystery fosters both deep reverence and paralyzing fear among her nobles, who respect her as the mother of their race but cannot fathom her incredible longevity, as most Methuselah live only a few centuries. Despite this fearsome public persona, her private character is remarkably different. She possesses a playful, mischievous, and sometimes childish personality. She enjoys collecting wind-up toys and frequently indulges in a secret, ordinary life outside the palace. On one occasion, she disguises herself as a simple tea seller and a medical student in the human quarter of the capital, allowing her to walk freely among her people and observe her empire from the ground level. When in this guise, she can be animated and dramatic, even reacting with exaggerated despair over the price of goods, a stark contrast to the chilling authority she can command in an instant.

As a Crusnik, a being that feeds on the blood of other vampires, Seth possesses abilities that far surpass those of ordinary Methuselah. Her signature power is the ability to generate and manipulate highly concentrated sonic waves, which she can project from her signature weapon, a pair of tuning forks. This ability is devastating; the high-frequency vibrations can freeze, disintegrate, or reduce her enemies to pillars of salt. Like her brothers, she can materialize her own blood into blades and wields the standard Crusnik traits of flight, superhuman physical prowess, and an extremely potent regenerative healing factor, making her nearly immortal. In the anime, she is seen transforming into her Crusnik form at a rate of forty percent, though the light novels reveal she can access far greater power.

Within the empire's political structure, her most trusted and pivotal relationship is with Mirka Fortuna, the Duchess of Moldavia, who serves as her public decoy and a key advisor. Their bond is one of deep trust and affection, with Seth treating Mirka as a confidante and the Duchess serving as the Empress's shield against assassination attempts. Another significant relationship is with Suleiman, the Duke of Tigris, a noble who served her faithfully for three centuries. His loyalty, however, curdled into bitter resentment because, despite his centuries of service, he had never been permitted to see her true face. This perceived lack of trust drove him to conspire against her, a plot that ultimately leads to his demise at the hands of his own relative, Astharoshe Asran. Seth also has a warm, if complicated, connection with Ion Fortuna, Mirka's grandson. She watches over him with a protective, grandmotherly eye, teasing him about his relationships while fiercely punishing those who harm him.

The central motivation driving Augusta Vradica is the preservation of her empire and the protection of her people, whom she genuinely views as her children, regardless of whether they are Methuselah or human. She maintains a strict and enforced balance within her domain, forbidding the powerful Methuselah nobility from treating their human subjects as mere livestock and ensuring that harming a human is considered damaging the Empress's own property. Her long-term goals include researching a way to make the Methuselah immune to the lethal effects of ultraviolet light and silver, seeking a future where her children no longer need fear the sun. Her refusal to declare war on the Vatican is influenced by her knowledge that her brother, Abel, has chosen to side with humanity, and she seems to respect his choice even as their paths diverge.

Over the course of the narrative, her carefully maintained separation between the invincible Empress and the hidden girl begins to collapse. A conspiracy involving several high-ranking nobles, including Suleiman, leads to a direct attack on her life and the public revelation of her true face as a young girl. This event forces her to shed her veiled persona and intervene directly to stop the coup, demonstrating her immense power to her own court for the first time. Her character also shows a melancholic depth. After revealing her true nature in battle, even her pet squirrel, Abel, recoils from her in fear, a small but poignant moment that causes her to lament being hated once more. This moment reveals the personal cost of her power and the isolation that comes with being an immortal ruler. Ultimately, the original author's plans for her character are tragic; in the series' outlined conclusion, she meets her end at the hands of her brother Cain, who decapitates her, bringing her eight-hundred-year reign to a violent close.
