Description
Astharoshe Asran is a prominent character from the New Human Empire, a nation of Methuselah, the long-lived descendants of vampires. She holds the noble titles of Duchess of Odessa and later Marquise of Kiev, and serves as a direct subordinate to the Inspector General, a position that involves carrying out sensitive missions for the Emperor. Her full title reflects her high standing within the Empire's aristocratic hierarchy.
In appearance, Astharoshe is a striking and tall woman, standing over 180 centimeters. She has long ivory or blonde hair, though it is noted that in her youth her hair was red; the loss of a close friend caused it to lose its color, leaving only a single red tuft across her forehead. Her eyes are amber. She typically wears the rich, embroidered clothing of the Empire's nobility, often in blue and gold, but adapts her attire for missions in the outside world. Her primary weapon is a spear named Gae Bolg, a piece of lost technology that uses ionized xenon gas to generate a plasma blade of incredibly high density and temperature, capable of cutting through almost any substance.
Astharoshe's personality is defined by her hot-headed and strong-willed nature. She has a short temper and is easily irritated, which can lead her to act impulsively. Initially, she holds a very low opinion of Terrans, the humans living outside the Empire, often referring to them as barbaric. This prejudice is largely a product of Imperial propaganda and a lack of direct experience. However, beneath her proud and blunt exterior lies a caring and loyal individual who takes her duties and partnerships seriously. She is fiercely devoted to the Empress and is willing to undertake any mission for the good of her people.
A central part of her story involves a mission to Venice to capture Enderle Kudza, a renegade Methuselah mass murderer who killed her former partner. Driven by a deep personal grudge and grief, she pursues him recklessly, causing a public battle that results in the deaths of many human civilians and severe injuries to her reluctant partner, Father Abel Nightroad of the Vatican's AX agency. This event is a turning point for her. Faced with the consequences of her impulsiveness and Abel's selfless aid, she deeply regrets her actions and begins to question her prejudices. She comes to respect Abel, eventually accepting him as her true partner, a word of great significance to her.
Her role in the story expands from a single-minded avenger to a key ally between the Empire and the Vatican. After her mission in Venice, she becomes one of the few Methuselah with practical experience and understanding of human politics and customs, eventually becoming a noted expert on the outside world. Later, when the Vatican sends envoys into the Empire, she shelters them in her estate and fights alongside Abel to thwart a conspiracy to assassinate the Empress. Her key relationships are defined by her partnership with Abel Nightroad, which becomes an important bridge in secret peace negotiations, and her unwavering loyalty to the Empress Augusta Vradica.
Astharoshe demonstrates significant development throughout the narrative. She evolves from an insular, prejudiced noblewoman driven by revenge into a more open-minded and diplomatic figure who values her cross-cultural partnership. Her impulsive nature is tempered by experience, and she channels her formidable combat skills, primarily using her plasma spear Gae Bolg in close-quarters battle, toward protecting the fragile peace between Methuselah and Terrans. Her abilities as a Methuselah grant her superhuman strength and speed, but her signature power lies in her mastery of this ancient and devastating weapon.
