Description
Father Hugue de Watteau is a Terran Catholic priest serving as a deputy enforcer for the AX Agency, the Vatican’s secret executive branch dedicated to handling supernatural threats. He is known by the codename Sword Dancer, a reference to his extraordinary skill with a bladed staff that conceals both a katana and a wakizashi. Born in the year 3032 AD in Antwerp to a noble family that had held the position of Chief Inspector for generations, de Watteau possessed the largest military power in the Netherlands before his clan was annihilated in a vampire attack at Burges nine years prior to the main story. The massacre resulted in the loss of both his arms, which were replaced with mechanical prosthetics that grant him superhuman speed and strength, allowing him to match an average vampire in combat. During this same incident, his younger sister, Anaïs de Watteau, was presumably kidnapped, an event that shapes his internal world and his actions.

Personality-wise, de Watteau is a man driven by a deep-seated need for revenge, a motivation that frequently puts him at odds with his superiors as he often defies direct orders to pursue leads on his sister's whereabouts and the identity of his family's murderer. He typically presents a stoic and indifferent exterior, with a face that rarely betrays emotion. This cold demeanor is a protective layer over a core of intense rage and pain, one that can erupt violently when those he cares about are threatened. Despite his singular focus, he demonstrates a capacity for recognizing comrades in arms, acknowledging others as fellow soldiers in the fight against the Methuselah. He is also noted by his colleague William Walter Wordsworth as being an incompetent student, suggesting a strained or unimpressed dynamic with the agency's scientific genius.

In his role within the story, de Watteau is an agent of the AX, tasked with investigating vampire-related incidents. One of his most significant assignments involves an investigation into the mass murder of clergymen in Amsterdam. During this mission, he rescues Sister Agnes, who is revealed to be his surviving cousin in some versions of the narrative. The case leads to his capture and forced combat against a werewolf in a pit, a situation from which he is saved when Agnes retrieves his weapon for him. Witnessing Agnes being stabbed by the regional vampire Count Karel van der Verf sends de Watteau into a murderous frenzy, allowing him to slay both the beast and the vampires present. This arc also reveals that the attack on his family was orchestrated by his childhood friend and distant kin, Jan van Maylen, who coveted the Watteau clan's political power. When de Watteau finally confronts Jan, he chooses not to kill him immediately, instead vowing to return and exact his revenge after he has slain the remaining noble vampires responsible.

Key relationships define his journey. His lost sister Anaïs functions as an absent but ever-present motivation, driving his insistent search to the point where he is known to call other girls by her name. His bond with Sister Agnes, whether as a distant cousin or simply a fellow nun of the church, proves strong enough to shatter his controlled composure. His past friendship with Jan van Maylen represents a profound betrayal, transforming a childhood bond into a target for future retribution.

De Watteau’s notable abilities are almost entirely combat-oriented. His primary weapon is a blade-staff, a versatile polearm that allows him to fight effectively at various ranges. However, his greatest assets are his mechanical arms. These prosthetics provide him with the necessary speed and physical power to fight Methuselah on equal terms, a rare capability for a normal human. Complementing his physical prowess are superior analytical skills, which aid him in his investigative work for the AX Agency. His body bears many scars from past engagements with vampires, serving as a physical testament to his long and brutal war against them.
