Description
Genshitenson, also known as Genshi Tenson, is a supporting character in the anime Soul Hunter, which is based on the manga Houshin Engi. He holds the distinguished position of headmaster of Kun Lun Mountain and is recognized as one of the Three Great Sennin, the most powerful and revered immortals in the Sennin World.
As the supreme leader of Kun Lun Mountain, Genshitenson is portrayed as a figure of immense wisdom and strength, yet his personality is also marked by a deep and caring affection for his disciples. He is the master of the protagonist, Taikoubou, and was previously the teacher of a promising student named Ou Eki. His primary motivation throughout Soul Hunter is to restore order to a human world thrown into chaos by the corrupting influence of the demon sennin Dakki and the tyrannical rule of Emperor Chu. To achieve this, he initiates a grand plan known as the Houshin Project, a mission to seal away three hundred and sixty-five dangerous demons to prevent them from interfering in human affairs. This mission is ostensibly aimed at replacing the corrupt Yin dynasty with the virtuous Shuu dynasty. However, Genshitenson also harbors a hidden and more profound objective related to the creation of a new world called the Shinkai, the true nature of which remains known only to him.
In the story, Genshitenson serves as the architect who sets the entire plot in motion. From his seat atop Kun Lun Mountain, he summons his carefree disciple, Taikoubou, and bestows upon him the enormous responsibility of carrying out the Houshin Project. He equips Taikoubou for this daunting task by giving him powerful artifacts, most notably the Dashinben and the Suupuushan. His role is primarily that of a wise, distant mentor and a strategist who acts from a higher plane, entrusting the dangerous fieldwork to his students while overseeing the larger cosmic plan.
Genshitenson’s key relationships are central to his character. His most prominent bond is with his disciple Taikoubou, whom he raised and trained, possibly from a young age. While he tasks Taikoubou with a perilous quest, this action is not one of cruelty but rather a testament to his confidence in his student's unique abilities and cunning, as well as a necessary step in a much larger design. Another significant relationship is his former student, Ou Eki. In a political move to maintain relations between Konron and the Kingou, Genshitenson traded Ou Eki to the sennin Tsuuten Kyoushu. This act had severe consequences, as Ou Eki was transformed into the dark sennin known as Ou Tenkun, a bitter and clever antagonist to Taikoubou. This backstory highlights a more complex and morally ambiguous side to Genshitenson, suggesting that his actions, however wise they seem, can have tragic and unforeseen repercussions.
Regarding his development, Genshitenson is initially believed to be the mastermind behind the Houshin Project. However, as the story progresses, it is revealed that the true origins of the project and its ultimate purpose were conceived by another, far more ancient being. This revelation shifts his role from an omnipotent originator to a powerful executor of a plan devised by a higher power, adding layers to his character as a guardian of an ancient and mysterious design.
In terms of notable abilities, Genshitenson is an immensely powerful sennin, though he rarely engages in direct combat. His true power is demonstrated through his vast collection of paopei, which are magical treasures or weapons. He is so powerful and generous that he often gives these treasures away to his beloved disciples; for instance, he gives the Dashinben to Taikoubou. His personal and most significant paopei is Bankohan, one of the seven super paopei. Bankohan possesses the terrifying ability to manipulate gravity within a defined area. At its maximum power, it can increase gravity a thousandfold, creating a localized black hole that can consume everything in its vicinity. Genshitenson is known to have used this devastating power only once in the series, against a powerful enemy named Bunchuu.
