Description
Fay D. Flourite, originally named Yuui, is a central figure known as a powerful magician from the country of Celes. His journey begins not by chance but by his own design, as he uses his magic to transport himself to the shop of the Dimensional Witch, seeking to never return to his home world. This act sets the stage for his role as one of the key travelers in the group alongside Syaoran, Sakura, and Kurogane.

On the surface, Fay presents a persona that is happy-go-lucky, energetic, and carefree. He is good-natured and often teases his companion Kurogane with a series of ridiculous and affectionate nicknames, much to the ninja's annoyance. This mask of cheerful nonchalance, however, conceals a deeply troubled and emotionally distant individual. Fay is profoundly perceptive and as skilled a fighter as Kurogane, but he values his own life very little, rarely fighting hard to preserve it unless someone he cares for is in danger. His past is a dark and overwhelming burden that he attempts to bury beneath a perpetual smile. He is resolute in keeping others at arm's length, believing that getting too close to anyone will only lead to pain, a defense mechanism born from immense psychological trauma.

Fay's central motivation for joining the interdimensional quest is escape. He is fleeing from King Ashura of Celes, a ruler he was forced to seal away in a deep sleep. Unable to bring himself to kill Ashura, Fay chose to imprison him instead, but knowing the spell is not permanent, he ran to avoid facing the king when he inevitably awakens. His role in the story is that of a powerful ally and observer. He is enigmatic, and his true objectives and deep-seated sorrow remain hidden for much of the narrative, making him an unpredictable but invaluable member of the party. He provides magical support, strategic insight, and a layer of mystery that contrasts with the more straightforward motivations of his companions.

The key relationships in Fay's life are defined by love, loss, and a desperate attempt to avoid attachment. His tragic past is rooted in his relationship with his identical twin brother, also named Fai. Born in the country of Valeria, the twins were seen as a cursed omen. Imprisoned separately in a timeless tower, they were tormented until the magician Fei Wong Reed offered to free only one. Fay's brother chose to save him, resulting in his own death, a memory later twisted by Fei Wong to make Yuui believe he was the selfish one. Consumed by guilt, Yuui took his brother's name and became a pawn for Fei Wong, who placed two terrible curses upon him. Later, King Ashura of Celes took him in, gave him the surname Flourite, and tutored him in magic, but ultimately raised him with the intention of having Fay kill him to break one of his curses, a fate Fay could not accept. Within the traveling group, his relationship with Kurogane is the most significant. Despite Fay's attempts to remain distant, Kurogane sees through his facade and repeatedly refuses to abandon him. This bond becomes literal when Fay is turned into a vampire to save his life and must regularly drink Kurogane's blood to survive.

Fay undergoes a profound transformation throughout the story. His cheerful mask begins to slip, especially after a traumatic event in the Tokyo arc where his left eye, containing half of his magical power, is consumed. Brought to the brink of death, he is transformed into a vampire against his will, gaining enhanced physical abilities and claws but becoming dependent on Kurogane's blood. His personality becomes much colder, solemn, and distant, and he stops using playful nicknames for Kurogane, addressing him formally in an effort to sever their growing emotional tie. After confronting the truth of his past and the fate of his brother and King Ashura, Fay begins to heal. He eventually returns to his more lighthearted demeanor, but the smile is now more genuine, representing a hard-won peace rather than a mask for despair.

Fay possesses several notable abilities. He is an exceptionally powerful magician, though the nature of his magic is such that it is primarily destructive, capable only of attack and defense, and he cannot perform healing spells. A significant portion of his power is stored in his blue eyes, which are the source of his magic and have also greatly extended his lifespan. After losing his left eye, his magical power is halved. Later transformed into a vampire, he gains accelerated regeneration, increased strength and agility, and the ability to extend long, sharp claws from his fingertips. His need to drink blood to survive creates a permanent, life-sustaining link with Kurogane. Despite his vast power, Fay is also highly skilled in physical combat, evasion, and is perceptive enough to assess the strength and nature of other beings magic. Beyond fighting, he is known to be a talented cook and artist.
