Description
Asuna Kujo is introduced in the later portion of the story as the daughter of a wealthy and respected family. Her upbringing has been extremely sheltered, and she has graduated from an all-girls university, which has contributed to her being somewhat innocent and unworldly for her age. She lives with her parents, who attend to her every need, and despite her privileged background, she does not display any snobbery or arrogance.
In terms of personality, Asuna is exceptionally kind-hearted, warm, and shy. She is so soft-spoken that people sometimes struggle to hear her, and her innocence is portrayed as a defining trait. Her extreme shyness has led her to compensate for a lack of human friends with a deep love for dogs, of which she owns several and treats like members of her family, often calling them her children or siblings. Her dogs accompany her everywhere, and she trusts their judgment of character implicitly; their approval of a person is a significant factor in her own feelings toward them.
Her primary motivation in the narrative is her love for Shun Mitaka. Their families, through Mitaka's uncle, arrange a traditional omiai, or marriage meeting, to unite their households for business and social reasons. Upon meeting Mitaka, Asuna instantly decides he is the one for her, a conviction that is only strengthened when her beloved dogs show a clear liking for him. While she is initially unaware of the full depth of Mitaka's feelings for Kyoko Otonashi, she eventually becomes aware of them. Despite her shy nature, she is quietly determined in her pursuit of Mitaka and is not above trying to further their relationship, even asking Kyoko for a meeting to discuss the situation.
Asuna plays a crucial role as a romantic rival and a narrative catalyst. Her presence forces Mitaka to confront his feelings and his future, mirroring the situation between Yusaku Godai and his own well-meaning but mismatched suitor, Kozue Nanao. Despite Mitaka’s initial reluctance due to his crippling fear of dogs and his love for Kyoko, Asuna’s gentle persistence and moments of acute perception, such as noticing that his smile looks forced in a photograph, slowly reveal her compassionate and empathetic nature to him. A key development in her story involves a significant misunderstanding where Mitaka, drunk and distraught, spends a night at her family's home. Due to confusion over her dog's pregnancy, Mitaka believes he has compromised Asuna and feels honor-bound to marry her, a misunderstanding Asuna does not immediately correct.
Throughout her development, Asuna shows a remarkable capacity for putting others' feelings before her own, even risking bringing shame to her family to help Mitaka during a difficult period in his life. Her defining trait is her quiet strength and devotion. In the end, she marries Shun Mitaka, and their relationship proves to be a very happy and successful one. By the series' conclusion, Asuna Mitaka has given birth to twin daughters, Moe and Mei, and is expecting a third child. Her notable ability, if it can be called one, is her profound and almost supernatural connection with dogs, including remembering the names of every dog she meets, which stands in stark contrast to her husband's intense phobia.
