Description
Akemi Roppongi is a resident of room six at the Maison Ikkoku boarding house and works as a hostess and bartender at a nearby bar called the Cha-Cha Maru. Her late-night shift means she often returns home intoxicated, giving her a perpetually sleepy, half-lidded expression well into the afternoon. She is known for lounging around the boarding house in skimpy, see-through lingerie, a habit that occasionally draws complaints but which the regular residents have long accepted. Akemi has a calm, languid demeanor and a mischievous, teasing personality. She enjoys drinking and socializing with fellow tenants Hanae Ichinose and the enigmatic Mr. Yotsuya, and the three frequently gather to party, gossip, and meddle in the lives of their neighbors. She is particularly fond of tormenting the young student Yusaku Godai, though her jabs are generally less harsh than those of her companions. She flirts openly with the wealthy tennis coach Shun Mitaka, clinging to his arm despite knowing of his interest in the boarding house manager, Kyoko Otonashi. Beneath her carefree exterior, Akemi reveals a quiet desire for a stable, supportive relationship, stemming from past disappointments including a boyfriend who left her for another woman. Her worldliness inadvertently helps the more naive Kyoko become more assertive. Over the course of the story, Akemi ultimately marries her boss, known only as Master, and moves into an apartment above the Cha-Cha Maru. In the Shipwrecked on Ikkoku Island storyline, when the cast is stranded after an accident, she remains true to her nature, spending her time partying with Yotsuya and Ichinose and jokingly suggesting they might have to start families on the island.
