Description
Shaina is a female Silver Saint of the Ophiuchus constellation in the anime Saint Seiya, one of the two most prominent secondary female characters in the original story alongside Marin, and she holds the role of Ophiuchus Saint during the wars between Athena and Poseidon and between Athena and Hades in the twentieth century. She was trained at the Sanctuary and follows its strict warrior codes, including the custom that female Saints must always wear a mask that conceals their identity, with the tradition holding that her face may be seen only by someone worthy of seeing it. She has an athletic build and light green hair, and beneath the mask she hides a face that is soft, beautiful, and peaceful, a direct contrast to her fierce public reputation.
In terms of personality, Shaina is temperamental and strong-willed, at times insolent, and her aggressiveness in combat is reflected in her everyday behavior. She can be harsh, imposing, and quick to anger, and her fellow Saints at the Sanctuary treat her with absolute respect because of her formidable nature. Despite this rough exterior, she is capable of deep personal feeling, which becomes central to her character.
Her motivations change significantly over the course of the story. Initially, she trained Cassios as a candidate for the Pegasus Cloth, and when Cassios was defeated by the Bronze Saint Seiya, she sought revenge and intended to kill Seiya herself for defeating her disciple. During their battle, Seiya knocked off her mask and saw her face, which placed her under the law of female Saints: she was expected to either kill the man who saw her face or fall in love with him. She fell in love with Seiya, and from that point her motivations shifted from vengeance to a secret devotion that gradually led her to protect him and to serve Athena as a loyal ally rather than an enemy.
Her role in the story begins with her as an adversary of Seiya during the early conflicts at the Sanctuary, where she aligned herself with the Sanctuary and the Patriarch. Over time she becomes a supporting figure in later arcs, acting as an ally who pursues Seiya, sometimes fights him, and sometimes protects him from the shadows. In one notable moment in the anime, she interrupts when Saori attempts to kiss an unconscious Seiya, showing the depth of her feelings. In the later continuation Saint Seiya Omega, she appears as a long-time comrade-in-arms of Seiya and becomes the mentor of Koga, her second disciple after Cassios, training him to protect Athena in Seiya's place. When Athena is attacked by Mars, Shaina tries to defend her and has her mask destroyed by Mars's fire in the process.
Her key relationships include her complicated bond with Seiya, which evolves from rivalry and enmity into a potential romantic interest and finally into a platonic friendship and long-standing partnership. She also has a significant connection to Cassios as his former master, a rivalry with the Silver Saint Marin, and in Omega a teacher-student relationship with Koga. She is also described as the successor of the Ophiuchus Saint Odysseus.
As a Silver Saint, Shaina possesses advanced mastery of Cosmo, granting her abilities far superior to those of ordinary Bronze Saints, including tremendous superhuman physical strength and movement speed that ranges from roughly mach 2 to mach 5. Her signature technique is the Thunder Claw, a lightning-based attack that channels raw thunder through her hands, and she is also associated with techniques such as Lightning Viper and the Thunder Cosmo. Her fighting style is direct and brutal, built around overwhelming lightning power rather than complex strategy.
