Description
Saori Kido is the modern-era reincarnation of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war. Born in the Sanctuary of Greece, she is the latest in a long line of divine incarnations that appear on Earth whenever it is threatened by evil, a cycle that typically occurs every few hundred years. Her mortal name was given to her by her adoptive grandfather, the wealthy Japanese businessman Mitsumasa Kido, who took her in after she was rescued as an infant. Her birth date is recognized as September 1st, and her physical appearance is that of a thirteen-year-old girl, standing 155 centimeters tall with a slender build. She is described as exceptionally beautiful, with an elegant and noble bearing. In the original manga, her long hair is depicted as a shade of brown or auburn, while most animated adaptations feature her with distinctive violet or light purple hair.

The circumstances of her arrival in Japan are rooted in a great crisis. Thirteen years before the main story, the Gemini Gold Saint, Saga, driven by evil ambition, murdered the Pope and attempted to assassinate the newborn Athena in her cradle. The Sagittarius Gold Saint, Aiolos, defied the order, rescued the infant goddess, and escaped the Sanctuary. Mortally wounded, Aiolos entrusted the baby to Mitsumasa Kido, a tourist in Greece, before dying. Kido took the child back to Japan and raised her as his own granddaughter, naming her Saori.

In her early childhood, Saori was unaware of her divine nature. Growing up as the heiress to the massive Kido conglomerate, which would later become the Graude Foundation, she was a spoiled and haughty child who looked down on the many orphans her grandfather had gathered and sent to train as Saints. She treated these boys poorly, demanding they serve her whims, a behavior that created significant resentment, particularly in the future Pegasus Saint, Seiya, who refused to submit to her. However, a profound change occurred as she matured. On his deathbed, her grandfather revealed the truth of her origin: she was not his flesh and blood but the goddess Athena. Learning of her sacred duty to protect humanity, Saori renounced her selfish past. She grew into a dignified, compassionate, and immensely responsible young woman, fully embracing her role as the leader of the Saints.

As the leader of the Saints, Saori's primary role is to guide her warriors in their sacred duty of protecting the Earth from gods and forces that would seek to dominate or destroy it. She is a symbol of justice and peace, and despite being the goddess of war, she only ever engages in conflict to defend the innocent, not for conquest or personal gain. Early in the story, she organizes the Galactic Tournament, ostensibly as a sporting event for her Bronze Saints, but in truth, it is a strategic move to draw out the corrupt forces controlling the Sanctuary and reclaim her rightful place as the goddess. Throughout the series, her primary motivation is the protection of humanity. This manifests not as a distant command but as a profound, personal sacrifice. She repeatedly and willingly puts herself in mortal danger, such as allowing herself to be shot with a golden arrow to test the loyalty of the Saints, imprisoning herself in the Main Breadwinner to atone for humanity's sins and stop Poseidon's floods, and ultimately, allowing herself to be captured by Hades to infiltrate the Underworld and strike at his true body.

Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with her adoptive grandfather, Mitsumasa Kido, is foundational; she revered him as a father figure and seeks to honor his memory and justify his seemingly harsh methods. Her most significant relationship is with the Bronze Saints, especially Seiya. Initially, they are resentful of her authority, but her genuine change of heart, selfless acts, and unwavering faith in them forge an unbreakable bond of loyalty and friendship. She comes to care deeply for them, not just as her soldiers, but as cherished companions, with a particularly subtle but powerful connection to the headstrong Seiya. Other important figures include her loyal butler, Tatsumi Tokumaru, one of the few who knew her secret from the beginning, and the Pope of the Sanctuary, who she ultimately confronts to liberate the Sanctuary from its corrupt ruler, Gemini Saga. Her family also includes other Olympian gods, such as her siblings Apollo and Artemis, who appear in later story arcs.

Throughout the narrative, Saori undergoes significant development. She transitions from a unaware, spoiled princess to a solemn, duty-bound goddess, and finally, to a leader who balances her immense divine power with her genuine human emotions. While she initially keeps a formal and somewhat distant demeanor befitting a goddess, her experiences and sacrifices allow her to express more of her humanity, showing vulnerability, affection, and even a romantic interest in Seiya that her duties as a goddess prevent her from fully pursuing. Her development is one of integrating her divine responsibilities with the mortal heart she has grown to possess.

As a deity, Saori possesses a cosmos, a spiritual energy, of immeasurable scale, surpassing that of any Saint. Although she rarely engages in direct combat, preferring to support her Saints by amplifying their cosmos and healing their wounds, she is a formidable warrior in her own right when confronting other gods. She wields several divine artifacts. The Nike, a golden staff that serves as a scepter, is a symbol of victory that she used to deliver the final blow against Hades. Her Aegis shield, held on her left arm, is nearly impervious to any attack and can dispel evil. She also possesses a divine cloth, which is superior to all other cloths and takes the form of a giant statue in her temple when not in use. Her powers include generating powerful healing auras that can restore the cosmos and mend the bodies of Saints on the brink of death, using her divine blood to awaken the true potential of sacred armors, teleportation, and creating powerful barriers such as the Seal of Athena to imprison hostile deities. Her cosmos is so refined that she has awakened the Eighth Sense, allowing her to enter the Underworld and retain her full power, unbound by the laws of the realm of the dead.
