Description
Kagura Tennozu is the female protagonist, a fifteen-year-old girl who finds herself at the center of a dark conspiracy involving the ultrarich and their depraved desires. She is the only daughter of Shinsen Tennozu, the powerful and ruthless head of the Tennozu Group, a vast financial conglomerate. Despite her status as an heiress, Kagura lives a life of profound isolation and abuse within a luxurious gilded cage, a high skyscraper in Tokyo. Her mother subjects her to severe mistreatment, including physical neglect and psychological torment, starving her and blaming her for the loss of her own youth and beauty. This abuse is partly driven by Shinsens obsession with Kaguras father, who abandoned her. Furthermore, Kagura is secretly taken from her home under hypnosis to serve as the Goddess for the Roppongi Club, a secret society where the wealthy pay to indulge their darkest fantasies.
In terms of personality, Kagura initially presents as a sweet, demure, and incredibly innocent young girl. Having been sheltered from the outside world her entire life, she has almost no social skills and a naive understanding of human interaction. She endures the constant abuse from her mother with quiet resignation, clinging to a faint hope that she might one day earn her mothers genuine love. This deep-seated longing for affection and freedom is a core part of her character. When not under the clubs hypnosis, she is prone to tears and vulnerability, a direct result of the terrible treatment she has endured. She also appears to have a split persona, as she has no conscious memory of her time acting as the Goddess in the club, believing those experiences to be horrible nightmares.
Her central role in the story is that of a MacGuffin Super-Person, a living catalyst whose existence drives the entire plot. Kaguras bodily fluids contain a unique enzyme that activates a dormant virus known as the Euphoria factor in certain individuals. When she kisses a person carrying this latent gene, they gain supernatural abilities based on their innermost obsessions or fetishes, becoming a Euphoric. She is completely unaware of this power and is instead manipulated by Suitengu, the club's operator, who uses her as a tool to bestow powers upon his followers and secure their loyalty. Her primary motivation, once she is rescued from this life, is simply to be free and to live a normal life away from those who seek to exploit her.
Her most significant relationship is with Tatsumi Saiga, a war photographer who discovers the club and whom she kisses, granting him explosive powers. When he takes her to escape the club and she regains consciousness, she begs him to take her away with him, and he agrees. Over the course of the series, she develops a deep bond and a precocious crush on Saiga, who is in his late thirties. He becomes her protector and the first person to show her genuine kindness. In stark contrast, her relationship with her mother, Shinsen, is one of mutual misery and abuse, though Kagura still mourns her when she dies. Her relationship with Suitengu is that of a victim to her exploiter; he is the one who hypnotizes her and uses her powers for his own ends.
Kaguras character arc is one of awakening and growth. She starts as a passive victim, unaware of the full extent of her manipulation. As she travels with Saiga, she witnesses the corrupt world she was a part of and comes to realize how she has been used, ultimately choosing to fight for her own freedom. Despite facing constant danger, including numerous kidnappings, she gradually grows stronger and less prone to tears. In the end, she is faced with a choice to sacrifice herself, believing her existence only causes suffering, but chooses to live after Saiga confesses his love for her. Five years later, she is shown to have returned to Saiga as a fully-grown woman, her development no longer stunted, finally earning a happy ending.
Kagura also has several notable attributes and abilities beyond being a catalyst for the Euphoria virus. She has an inoperable brain tumor, which gives her only six months to live as the story progresses. To preserve her power-giving abilities, her captors have artificially stunted her growth by injecting her with drugs to prevent puberty. This medication, combined with the starvation imposed by her mother, has left her body heavily intoxicated and weak. Her kiss, often depicted as a deep exchange of saliva, is the primary method by which she passes the enzyme to others. While she cannot use these powers herself, her sheer existence makes her the most sought-after and dangerous person in the world of Speed Grapher.
