Description
Apollo is a young American man who appears as a rival and later an ally to the main characters. He is introduced as a 26-year-old of tall and slender build, with light blonde hair and green eyes. He typically dresses in a white shirt, green pants, and a long cape. Apollo comes from a background of immense wealth, being the son of a billionaire businessman to whom he is expected to eventually hand over the family enterprise. Before being drawn into the mamodo battles, Apollo decided to embark on a solitary journey around the world in search of adventure, enjoying a life of freedom and travel.
Apollo's personality is marked by a carefree and adventurous spirit. He is presented as a prodigy with many talents, being an extraordinary musician as well as highly intelligent and perceptive. He is also depicted as noble and generous at heart. Initially, he does not take the mamodo battles seriously, viewing them as a form of entertainment or a way to gain experience through friendly competition. He shows no interest in burning the books of the mamodo he defeats, preferring simply to travel and fight for the thrill of it. However, he has a deeper, more sensitive side; he harbors a hidden sadness connected to his family and his nomadic lifestyle is partly an escape from the responsibilities and fraught relationship with his parents that await him at home.
Apollo's primary motivation changes over the course of his journey. At first, he seeks battles for fun and to grow stronger alongside his mamodo partner, Rops. His worldview is challenged upon meeting Zatch and Kiyo, who fight with the noble purpose of making Zatch a kind king. This encounter inspires Apollo to take battles seriously for the first time, fighting with the genuine goal of making Rops the king of the mamodo world. Later, after his partner Rops is defeated and sent back to the mamodo world by the powerful pair Zeno and Dufort, Apollo is driven by a desire for revenge and offers his full cooperation to help Zatch become king, hoping to avenge his friend.
Apollo's role in the story is primarily as a recurring rival and ally to the protagonists, Zatch and Kiyo. He and Rops first cross paths with them during their travels in Japan. Recognizing Kiyo as a book owner, Apollo challenges them to a serious battle, which ultimately ends in a draw due to exhaustion on both sides. After this fight, they part ways as friends. Apollo reappears later in the story to deliver crucial information. He seeks out Kiyo to report that he has witnessed a mamodo who looks very similar to Zatch—later revealed to be Zatch's twin brother, Zeno—and that this mamodo and his book owner, Dufort, were powerful enough to destroy Rops's book, sending Rops back to the mamodo world. This encounter re-establishes Apollo as an ally who provides key intelligence and motivation for the protagonists.
Apollo's key relationship is with his mamodo partner, Rops, a small, animal-like creature who cannot speak but communicates through gestures and babbles. Their partnership began when Apollo, trapped in a country he could not leave, met a group of children taking care of Rops. When a large gate blocked his escape, Rops's book glowed for the first time, and Apollo read a spell that allowed Rops to carry him over the obstacle. The children then gave Rops and his book to Apollo, also gifting Rops a scarf that becomes a symbol of their bond and Rops's wish for a king of freedom. Apollo's relationship with the main characters, Kiyo and Zatch, evolves from a friendly rival to a cooperative alliance based on mutual respect and a shared goal.
Apollo undergoes notable development from a carefree traveler seeking amusement to a determined fighter with a serious purpose. Initially viewing battles as a sport, he learns from Zatch and Kiyo the value of fighting for a meaningful dream. The defeat of Rops hardens his resolve, shifting his motivation from personal adventure to a quest for vengeance and aiding Zatch in becoming a kind king to prevent future tragedies.
In terms of notable abilities, Apollo does not possess magical powers himself but is an exceptional book owner. He is incredibly fast and agile, using his speed to evade enemy attacks during battles. His high intelligence allows him to quickly devise effective strategies and outmaneuver opponents. He also demonstrates a special kind of intuition or perception that enables him to predict his opponent's actions, giving him a tactical advantage in fights. Apollo is the reader of Rops's spell book, which contains spells that manipulate ropes and chains. These spells allow Rops to lift and throw massive objects like boulders, capture enemies, and create barriers.
