Description
Kiyomaro Takamine, often shortened to Kiyo, is the human protagonist of the story. He is a 14-year-old junior high school student and a certified genius with an IQ measured at over 180. At the outset, Kiyo is a deeply introverted and apathetic young man. His exceptional intelligence made him a target for bullying and social isolation from his peers, leading him to adopt a cold and arrogant demeanor as a defense mechanism. He became disillusioned with school and his peers to the point of regularly skipping classes, resigning himself to a solitary existence.

This all changes with the sudden arrival of Zatch Bell, a small, amnesiac Mamodo boy sent to him by Kiyo's father. Despite his initial frustration and bad temper, which he often vents on the cheerful and clueless Zatch, Kiyo gradually opens up. Through the battles they face and Zatch's unwavering, innocent sense of justice, Kiyo becomes more outgoing, compassionate, and even popular among his classmates. While he retains a disturbingly bad temper and is easily irritated, his core personality shifts from one of isolation to one defined by loyalty and fierce protectiveness for his friends.

Kiyo's primary role is that of Zatch's bookkeeper and battle strategist. He reads the spells from Zatch's red book, which manifest as Zatch's lightning-based attacks. His genius-level intellect makes him an excellent and quick-thinking tactician, allowing the duo to defeat Mamodo opponents who are far stronger than Zatch. This analytical prowess is his greatest contribution to their partnership, turning potential losses into victories through clever planning and utilization of their spells.

His key relationships are the driving force behind his development. His bond with Zatch is the most important, as the Mamodo's influence is what pulls him out of his shell. He also shares a dynamic with his ditzy classmate Suzy Mizuno, who often inadvertently irritates him. Throughout the story, he forms significant alliances and friendships with other human and Mamodo pairs, such as the idol Megumi Oumi and her defensive Mamodo Tia, as well as the magician Dr. Riddles and his Mamodo Kido. These relationships reinforce his growth and expand his motivations beyond merely surviving the Mamodo battle to helping Zatch achieve his goal of becoming a kind and noble king.

Kiyo undergoes significant development, particularly in his abilities. While his intelligence is his primary weapon, he eventually gains a profound power known as the Answer Talker. After being killed in battle and subsequently brought back to life, Kiyo awakens this ability, which grants him the power to instantly know the correct answer to any question or situation. In combat, this translates to an almost precognitive understanding of an opponent's attack, allowing him to instinctively know how to evade and counter it most effectively. This ability marks his evolution from a merely brilliant tactician to a truly extraordinary being, yet he remains grounded by his humanity and his desire to see Zatch succeed. In the end, after helping Zatch become king, he chooses to keep his painful memories of their time together rather than have them erased, demonstrating the depth of his character growth and the value he places on their bond.
