Description
Penny, also known as Patie or Patty in the original Japanese version, is a female Mamodo in Zatch Bell who appears as a major supporting character during the Stone Tablet arc, also referred to as the Ancient Mamodo arc. She is partnered with a human named Uri, known as Uluru in the Japanese version, and her spellbook is orange in color. She has a youthful appearance with short blue-green hair and blue eyes.
Her background begins in the Mamodo World, where she saw Zatch Bell fishing on a private beach and fell in love with him. Her affection was one-sided, and she spent considerable effort trying to interact with him before the tournament began. When she arrived on Earth, she entered into an arrangement with Uri, a poor man struggling to provide food for his family. The agreement was that she would help him obtain food by any means necessary as long as he helped her find Zatch. She openly claims to be Zatch's girlfriend, and her initial arrival in the story is marked by her determined search for him. Upon finally tracking him down in Japan, she discovers that Zatch has lost his memories of the Mamodo World. This revelation sends her into a rage, and she forces a battle against him, hoping either to make him remember her or to eliminate him from the tournament if she cannot.
Personality-wise, Penny starts as an antagonist defined by a strong will, a quick temper, and a possessive attitude toward Zatch. She dislikes being contradicted and tends to prioritize her own feelings and desires. Her love for Zatch is intense, and her sense of rejection fuels much of her early hostility. Despite this difficult exterior, she is capable of genuine care for others, particularly for Uri and his family, and she forms a real partnership with him beyond their initial bargain. She also demonstrates the capacity for self-reflection and change, as shown when she begins to doubt the choices she makes while serving a villainous cause.
Her motivations shift over the course of her story. Initially she is driven by romantic love for Zatch and the hope that he will return her feelings. When that hope collapses, her motivation turns to revenge, which leads her to ally with the antagonist Zofis, known as Milordo-Z in some versions. Zofis offers her the chance to help control the ancient Mamodo and gain an advantage in the tournament, which she accepts as a means of getting back at Zatch. However, as she leads a squadron of ancient Mamodo into battle, she realizes that these servants lack free will and the ability to fight for themselves, and she begins to question whether she made the right decision. Her final motivation becomes redemption and atonement, as she chooses to turn against her master and sacrifice herself to help Zatch and his allies.
Her role in the story is that of an enemy who redeems herself. She debuts seeking out Zatch, fights him when she learns of his memory loss, and is nearly destroyed by Zatch's powerful Bao Zakeruga spell before being saved by the intervention of Byonko, allowing her and Uri to escape. Afterward, she joins Zofis and leads ancient Mamodo forces in battle against Zatch's group. During the desperate fight against the powerful Mamodo Demolt, she and Byonko turn against Zofis, with Penny destroying the Moon Stone that sustains his power. Her own book is subsequently burned, sending her back to the Mamodo World. Her final wish before leaving is for Zatch and the others to forgive her and to play with her again when they all return to the Mamodo World, a request they accept.
In terms of key relationships, her connection to Zatch is the most defining, serving as the source of her affection, her anger, and ultimately her reconciliation. Her bond with Uri develops from a practical arrangement into a genuine friendship, with Uri standing by her even in dangerous situations. Byonko is a fellow figure under Zofis who saves her life and later joins her in defying their master, making him an important ally. Zofis is the villain she serves for a time but ultimately betrays, and his manipulation contributes to her growth.
Penny's notable abilities are centered on water. Her spells include Akuru, a water jet fired from her hands; Ganzu Akuru, high-speed water spheres; Akuruga, a spiral water jet; and Akuru Kiroro, crescent blades of slicing water. She also possesses Ashirido, a shield made of water that can absorb attacks, and Aku Spreido, which reverses an attack that was previously absorbed by the shield. Okuda Akuron creates multiple water jets that surround an opponent to restrain their movement, and Penny can also wield these jets like whips. Akurouku forms large water claws on her hands and feet and allows her to fire powerful arcs of water. Her strongest spells are Suou Giakuru, which creates a great dragon made of water similar in form to Zatch's Bao Zakeruga, and Shin Suou Giakuru, a more powerful version of that attack.
