TV-Series
Description
Kiyomaro Takamine, most often called Kiyo, is the primary human protagonist of the story. He is a fourteen-year-old junior high school student with an IQ measured at over 180, which places him firmly in the category of a genius. Despite his intellectual gifts, Kiyo begins the narrative as a deeply isolated and withdrawn individual. His exceptional intelligence made him a target for teasing and ostracism from his classmates, who perceived him as arrogant and different. This social rejection caused him to develop an introverted and apathetic demeanor, leading him to regularly skip school and retreat from meaningful interaction with the world around him.
Kiyo's entire lifestyle undergoes a profound transformation with the sudden and unexpected arrival of a strange, cheerful boy named Zatch Bell, who is sent to live with him by Kiyo's father. Zatch’s innocent, clueless, and relentlessly friendly nature acts as a direct counter to Kiyo's cynicism. Through their forced cohabitation and the subsequent battles they face, Kiyo begins to open up, becoming more outgoing and eventually growing popular in his class. However, his core personality retains a distinct edge; he has a disturbingly bad temper and is easily irritated, often venting his frustrations by yelling at the well-meaning but accident-prone Zatch or his ditzy classmate, Suzy Mizuno.
Kiyo’s primary motivation evolves from simple self-preservation to a deeply held commitment to help Zatch achieve his goal of becoming the kind king of the Mamodo world. After learning of the deadly tournament that forces Mamodo children to fight until only one remains, Kiyo, who initially wanted nothing to do with the conflict, dedicates himself to Zatch's cause. His role in the story is that of Zatch's bookkeeper, the human partner who reads the spell书的 commands from a red book, enabling Zatch to unleash his lightning-based powers. He is the strategic brain to Zatch's raw power, and together they form an inseparable team fighting against other Mamodo pairs.
His key relationships are central to his character development. His bond with Zatch is the most significant, as Zatch’s unwavering sense of justice and friendship slowly teaches Kiyo the value of trust and companionship. He also forms strong alliances with other Mamodo pairs, such as the shy Tia and her partner, the idol Megumi Oumi, as well as the Italian superstar Parco Folgore and his Mamodo, Kanchomé. These friendships are built on mutual respect and a shared desire for a more peaceful outcome to the Mamodo battle, expanding Kiyo’s social world far beyond what he had ever known.
Throughout the series, Kiyo demonstrates remarkable development, both as a person and as a combatant. His defining trait in battle is his exceptional tactical acumen; his high intelligence and quick decision-making allow him to devise strategies that enable Zatch to defeat Mamodo opponents who are far more powerful than they are. He even trains Zatch to respond to his pointed finger, circumventing the fact that casting spells often leaves Zatch unconscious. The most significant evolution of his abilities occurs during a climactic battle inside the giant Mamodo Faudo, where Kiyo is killed and subsequently brought back to life. This traumatic event awakens a power within him called the Answer Talker. This ability grants Kiyo the knowledge to find the answer to any question, which in combat translates to an almost supernatural capacity to instantly understand an opponent's attack, know precisely how to evade it, and identify the most effective method to counter it. At the story's conclusion, after helping Zatch become king, Kiyo is offered a wish but chooses to keep his memories of his friend, accepting the pain of their inevitable separation over the ease of forgetting.
