Description
Mizuno Suzume is a fourteen-year-old girl who attends the same school as Kiyo Takamine and appears as a recurring supporting character in Zatch Bell. She has short brown hair and brown eyes and is known for her cheerful, somewhat absentminded nature. Suzume has a long-standing crush on Kiyo, and she makes an effort to befriend him even before the arrival of Zatch, when Kiyo was often isolated and prone to making rude remarks. Her persistence in trying to connect with him reflects a friendly and determined side, though she can be easily flustered and is prone to bouts of jealousy when Kiyo spends time with other girls, particularly the pop star Megumi Oumi. Suzume is frequently depicted as ditzy and clumsy, sometimes failing to notice important events happening around her. One memorable instance involves her winning a trip that she believes is to Hong Kong but ends up in London, where Kiyo and Zatch are searching for Kiyo’s father, and she never realizes the mistake. A notable quirk of Suzume is her habit of drawing faces on fruit, especially oranges, to express her emotions. She often brings fruit to Kiyo, such as when she visits him in the hospital. Within the story, Suzume serves as a normal human anchor to Kiyo’s everyday life, providing a contrast to the magical battles involving mamodo. She is one of the first people to accept Zatch as a friend, and Zatch quickly grows fond of her. Her role is mostly comedic and supportive; she does not take part in the mamodo battles and has no special abilities, but her loyalty and genuine care for Kiyo and Zatch are consistent traits. Over the course of the series, Suzume’s character does not undergo major dramatic development, but she remains a steady presence and a reminder of the ordinary world that Kiyo is fighting to protect. She also appears in a short comic feature within the graphic novels titled Zatch and Suzy, which explores her interactions with Zatch in a lighter context.
