TV-Series
Description
Dufort is the human partner to the mamodo Zeno Bell, serving as his bookkeeper who reads the spells from Zeno's silver spellbook. He is a tall, lean young man with a calm and detached presence. His appearance is modern and understated, characterized by short, spiky blond hair, piercing blue eyes, and a serious expression that rarely changes. His typical attire consists of a pale jacket worn over a light green shirt, tucked into blue jeans with a belt, and finished with brown shoes.

Dufort is very silent and reserved, almost to the point of appearing completely emotionless. His demeanor is cold and serious, speaking very little and leaving most conversation to Zeno. This outward lack of emotion stems from a profoundly traumatic background. In the manga, his story reveals that he was sold to a mad scientist by his own mother for a price of ten thousand dollars. This scientist then performed cruel mental and emotional experiments on him throughout his childhood. In the anime, a similar but distinct backstory presents him as having powerful psychic abilities that led to his confinement in an asylum, where he was experimented on and abused for nearly his entire life. Both versions of his past resulted in a deep-seated hatred for humanity, a darkness in his heart that drew the attention of Zeno Bell, who eventually freed him to become his partner.

Dufort possesses notable mental abilities that give his partnership with Zeno a significant advantage in battle. His most defining power is known as the Answer Talker, a psychic ability that allows the user to instantly know the answer to any question or problem presented to them. This includes understanding how an opponent's attack works and how to defend against it, which makes him an extraordinarily effective strategist. The Answer Talker is also described as allowing him to communicate telepathically with Zeno, enabling them to coordinate their actions without the need for spoken words. In the manga, this ability is said to awaken when a human dies and then returns to life. The anime version downplays the formal Answer Talker concept but retains his general telepathic and mind-reading powers, which allow him to anticipate enemy intentions and elaborate winning strategies. In addition to these mental abilities, Dufort also demonstrates the power of telekinesis, allowing him to move objects with his thoughts.

Dufort's role in the story is that of a primary antagonist for a large portion of the series, particularly during the second half of the Faudo Arc. Together with Zeno, he operates from the shadows for much of the narrative before emerging as an immediate and overwhelming threat. His motivation is closely tied to his partnership with Zeno and, initially, his own desire for destruction. Zeno took an interest in him because of the hatred he harbored for humanity following the experiments he endured. This shared darkness made them a perfect, ruthless team. However, his motivations become more complex as the story progresses. After Zeno's book is burned following a climactic battle, Dufort wanders off in the manga, forced to find a new purpose after being used for so long. He eventually learns to use his Answer Talker abilities to help others, whether he wants to or not, finally appreciating what both Zeno and Zatch did for him.

The key relationship in Dufort's life is with Zeno Bell. Their teamwork is remarkably effective, largely due to Dufort's precognitive abilities directing Zeno with the necessary instructions to win any battle. While Zeno's ego can sometimes lead to brash decisions, they generally operate in perfect synchronicity. Despite their cool and often distant interactions, a deep care exists between them. Surprisingly, the manga reveals that they care for each other quite a lot. Zeno goes so far as to discard his protective mantle to shield Dufort from harm during a powerful attack. In a rare display of emotion, Zeno even sheds tears at their parting, wishing for Dufort to live on. For his part, Dufort picks up on subtle changes in Zeno's behavior, showing his attentiveness, and eventually refers to Zeno as his brother when thanking him and Zatch for helping him grow as a person. This bond is also shown in quieter, domestic moments, such as Dufort pedaling a bicycle with Zeno riding in the carrier.

Throughout the series, Dufort undergoes a significant development arc. He begins as a cold and almost inhuman figure, broken by his past and consumed by a desire for destruction. His partnership with Zeno, while born from shared darkness, gradually provides him with a sense of purpose. The turning point comes during the battle against Zatch. In the manga, Zeno catches a glimpse of his brother's memories, which softens his outlook and, by extension, Dufort's as well. Dufort's experience leads him to realize that his life is not meaningless. This growth culminates after Zeno's return to the mamodo world, where Dufort, instead of fading away, chooses to help others, including assisting Kiyo in developing his own Answer Talker ability and training other mamodo in their fight against a greater threat. He transforms from a vengeful antagonist into a person who has found value in his own existence and the bonds he has formed.
