Description
Azmaria Hendric is a central character in Chrono Crusade, a twelve-year-old girl known as the Apostle of Charity. She was born in Fátima, Portugal, and immigrated to the United States at a young age after losing her parents during World War I. Her early life was marked by tragedy and displacement; after the death of her birth parents, she was placed with a resentful foster family who viewed her as a financial burden before passing her off to a traveling band of singers. While she found a semblance of happiness and family with this musical troupe, this period of stability was also short-lived. Eventually, she was adopted by a wealthy nobleman named Ricardo Hendric, a demon tamer who sought to exploit her supernatural gifts for his own selfish purposes, specifically to revive his deceased wife.

Personality-wise, Azmaria is characterized by her quiet, peaceful, and remarkably mature demeanor, though this is tempered by deep-seated insecurity and profound sadness. Having experienced repeated abandonment and being treated as a tool, she developed a submissive and self-effacing nature, often apologizing for her very existence and believing her power brings only misfortune to those around her. Her favorite word is said to be sorry, reflecting her tendency to shoulder blame for the tragedies that befall her guardians. She dislikes ghosts and finds solace in singing, which is both her passion and the source of her miraculous ability. Despite her gentle and often tearful exterior, she possesses a hidden reserve of strength and a desperate desire to change, fueled by her admiration for a stronger female exorcist she comes to know.

Azmaria’s role in the story is activated when she is rescued from her adoptive father by the series' protagonists. Her captor had imprisoned her with a demon enforcer, intending to use her powers to manipulate the Astral Line for his own immortality. After being saved, she is taken into the protective custody of the Magdala Order. Her primary motivation shifts from mere survival to a yearning for connection and self-worth. She desperately wants to be useful and to no longer be a burden, aspiring to emulate the bravery and confidence she sees in her rescuer, Rosette Christopher. The deep-seated fear of being left behind again also leads to moments of poignant envy, particularly towards Rosette's biological brother, as she worries she will be replaced once he is found.

Her key relationships are central to her development. She forms an inseparable bond with Rosette and her demon partner, Chrono. Rosette becomes the older sister figure Azmaria never had, showing her that she does not need to be perfect and encouraging her to express genuine emotions like pouting or crying. Azmaria looks up to Rosette with fierce devotion, and despite Chrono being a demon, she befriends him without prejudice, appreciating his loyalty to Rosette. Through their example, she learns what it truly means to be strong and loved.

Throughout the narrative, Azmaria undergoes significant development, transforming from a weak, frightened girl who passively accepts her fate into a more determined individual committed to changing herself. Her initial fear and self-loathing regarding her own abilities gradually give way to a more accepting perspective, though this journey is fraught with emotional pain, such as when she learns of the death of her former singing troupe. In the later parts of the story, following the ultimate sacrifice of her friends, she carries on their memory, living a full life into old age. In the manga's conclusion, she establishes a foundation and is implied to have married, finding the peace and family she always sought.

Azmaria’s notable ability is her miraculous singing voice, which possesses the power to heal physical injuries and illnesses. As an apostle, her songs can manipulate the Astral Line, and when she uses her power, angelic wings emerge from her back as a shining light emanates from her to heal those nearby. This ability is tied to her emotional state and can exhaust her significantly, especially when used on a large scale. For a time after her initial rescue, her powers are temporarily lost, only to return later when needed most. Despite being a divine gift, Azmaria has long regarded her own healing voice as a curse, blaming it for the misfortunes and deaths of the families who took her in.
