Description
Father Ewan Remington is a prominent character who serves as the minister of the Order of Magdalene. He holds the position of a first-class exorcist, a highly influential member of the order, and acts as the second-in-command to Sister Kate Valentine, the head of the New York branch. His age appearance is that of a man of about twenty-seven, but he is considerably older, having been active for over fifty years.
Remington presents a calm, friendly, and controlled personality, even in dire situations. He is known for his charming and flirtatious demeanor, which makes him very popular with the girls in the order. Despite his pleasant exterior, he is a very powerful and mysterious fighter who hides many secrets.
His motivations are deeply rooted in a past tragedy. He is determined to fight his enemies, the demons, until the day he dies, no matter the consequences to himself. This resolve stems from an event over fifty years before the main story, when he failed to protect Mary Magdalene from the demon Chrono. He seems to have been in love with her and still remembers her fondly, and her loss drives his relentless mission.
In the story, Remington acts as a protector and surrogate father figure to the protagonist, Rosette Christopher. He was the one who brought Rosette and her demon partner Chrono to the Magdalen convent in New York and constantly keeps a close eye on them. Rosette herself has a small crush on him, though he does not reciprocate it romantically, seeing her more as a daughter. As a field agent, he often goes on missions to investigate the primary antagonist, Aion, and to search for Rosette's lost brother, Joshua. In the anime adaptation, he eventually leaves the Order.
Remington's character undergoes significant development, particularly in the manga where his history is explored in greater detail. He was originally a member of the religious order that escorted Mary Magdalene. After she was kidnapped by Chrono and later killed by Aion, he dedicated the next fifty years to combating demons. To continue his duty after suffering a severe injury that would have ended his career, he volunteered for a dangerous experiment. He was infused with Legion, the equivalent of a demon's cells, which granted him enhanced physical abilities but at a great cost; approximately forty percent of his body tissues consist of these implants. This procedure requires immense willpower to control, as losing that control would mean his death.
Ewan Remington possesses several notable abilities. He is a very powerful fighter, capable of slaughtering most demons by himself. His primary weapon is a cross that transforms into a sword, functioning similarly to a lightsaber. He also has an apparent ability to warp or teleport, instantly moving from New York to San Francisco without anyone noticing. In the anime, during a phone conversation, he implies that he is an angel, and his inability to age supports this, marking him as a fallen angel who has severed ties with God. In the manga, after the final battle, the side effects of the Legion implant weaken him to the point where he can no longer be an active exorcist, so he retires and spends his remaining years as a country priest.
