Description
Hirofumi Nonaka, often called Hiro-kun by those who know him, is a character from the anime DearS who serves as a popular student and self-assured playboy at Koharu High School. He is a teenager with a slim build, pale skin, and brown, shoulder-length hair that is typically parted in the middle. His brown eyes and school uniform complete his image as a quintessential attractive male student on campus.
Hirofumi's defining trait is his womanizing personality; he is well-known for his charm and is strongly suggested to have romantic or physical relationships with many of the girls at school, a pursuit he often refers to in coded terms such as having "coffee". This behavior is fueled by his confident and somewhat narcissistic nature, as he considers himself highly desirable. In the Japanese version of the series, he addresses girls with the pet name koneko-chan, which translates roughly to "kitten," reinforcing his habit of treating romantic interests as cute and interchangeable rather than as individuals.
When the story's protagonist, Takeya Ikuhara, begins to live with his DearS companion Ren, his indecisive actions cause Ren to doubt the nature of her master's feelings for her. Seeing an opportunity, Hirofumi Nonaka actively tries to seduce Ren away from Takeya. At one point, he comes closer than ever before to expressing genuine emotion, admitting that he "really likes" Ren, which is considered the closest he will ever get to confessing love for someone. Despite his best efforts and his typically successful methods, Ren does not reciprocate his advances; she thinks of him only as a friend, leading to his ultimate failure in this pursuit.
His role in the story is deeply intertwined with the main romantic dynamics, acting as a rival to Takeya for Ren's affection at a critical moment of doubt. He also shares a connection with the DearS girl Miu, who later develops feelings for Takeya. Faced with their shared romantic disappointment, Hirofumi and Miu briefly consider forming an alliance to pursue the objects of their respective affections. Hirofumi's character undergoes a notable shift after he gives up on winning Ren. To his horror, another DearS named Xaki forms a strong, persistent attachment to him. This development effectively ruins his playboy lifestyle, as Xaki's presence scares away any other girls who might consider approaching him, providing a form of ironic comeuppance for his previously carefree attitude.
Hirofumi Nonaka's most notable ability is his social charm. He has an almost encyclopedic memory for the faces and names of the female students within the school, allowing him to navigate social situations with practiced ease.
