TV-Series
Description
The Comtesse von Werdenberg, whose real name is Hiroko Kageyama, is a central figure in the conflict that defines the series. Before the cataclysmic event known as Twin X, she was employed as a researcher at Heaven's Gate, a scientific facility studying ancient ruins, where she worked closely with a colleague named Terumichi Madoka. She was in love with him, but as he was already married with a daughter, she instead married a wealthy scientist and count she also worked with, taking the title of Comtesse. When her husband perished in the Twin X explosion, she inherited his immense fortune.

In the aftermath of the disaster, which decimated the world's electronics and covered the sky with a strange mirror-like field known as the "Sheltering Sky," the Comtesse was one of only two apparent survivors from Heaven's Gate. She fell into a coma for several years. Upon waking, she dedicated her life and vast resources to locating and recruiting three children rumored to possess supernatural psychic abilities. These children, whom she rescued from troubled circumstances and raised as her own, are the Orga-Superior: Isamu, Fuko, and Toru. They collectively reside in a luxurious hotel called the Hotel Providence, which serves as their base of operations, and maintain a formal, ritualized household, including nightly formal dinners. The Comtesse is almost always seen dressed in formal, elegant attire and rarely smiles, maintaining an enigmatic and emotionally guarded demeanor.

Her primary motivation is to oppose the Gilgamesh, a group of super-powered beings led by Terumichi Madoka, who now calls himself Enkidu. The Comtesse believes the Gilgamesh seek to bring about a "Cleansing Flood" to wipe out humanity, and she tasks her Orga-Superior children with fighting them using their power, which is called Dynamis. However, her personal vendetta against Madoka is deeply intertwined with this mission. She shows a notable difference in her treatment of Madoka's children, Tatsuya and Kiyoko, after she takes them into her custody and pays off their substantial debts. She is noticeably warmer and more protective towards Tatsuya, who bears a strong physical resemblance to his father, while she harbors a cold disdain for Kiyoko, the daughter of the woman who married the man she loved. This favoritism creates significant tension, as Kiyoko in particular feels the Comtesse is trying to usurp her role as Tatsuya's caretaker and is mistrustful of her true intentions.

Throughout the story, the Comtesse is a figure of immense control and secrecy. She never speaks of her past and withholds crucial information not only from the Orga-Superior and the Madoka siblings but also from her allies, which leads to conflict with other forces like the Mitleid Corporation. As the series reaches its climax, the full truth of her involvement in the world's tragedy is revealed. She discovers that her own heart is the source of the life form Tear, which contaminated the embryos that would become the Gilgamesh. It is her deep-seated hatred and jealousy towards Terumichi Madoka's wife that caused the corruption, making her, in a profound sense, the origin of the very evil she has been fighting. In the final battle, after most other characters have perished, the Comtesse surrenders her long war. She allows Tear to fully enter her body, triggering the Cleansing Flood and bringing about the end of the human world.

In terms of notable abilities, the Comtesse is not a typical fighter. Her primary strength lies in her immense wealth and strategic leadership, which she uses to command and support the Orga-Superior. However, she also possesses the power of Dynamis. This ability is a result of medical procedures she underwent to save her life, where cloned pieces of her own Tear-contaminated flesh were placed in her body. She wields this power extremely sparingly, perhaps only in the most dire situations, or may be unable to access it freely under normal circumstances. Her true and most devastating ability, ultimately, is her capacity to end the world, born not from a superpower, but from a lifetime of unrequited love, jealousy, and sorrow.
