Description
Haruhara Haruko, also known by the alias Haruha Raharu, is a central figure in the FLCL narrative and serves as the primary antagonistic catalyst for its extraordinary events. Regarding her background, she is an extraterrestrial being of unspecified origin who claims to be nineteen years old, although this is questionable as another character observes that she appears to be at least twenty. She operates under the cover of being a first-class investigator for the Galactic Space Patrol Brotherhood, though her true motivations often diverge from any official duties.

In terms of personality, Haruko is an energetic, spontaneous, and unpredictably reckless individual whose behavior can be described as that of a sociopath. She is highly deceptive and remorseless, with a tendency to switch between different dispositions on a dime, making her difficult to read. Despite her often selfish and manipulative nature, she exhibits a playful demeanor even in high-stakes situations and occasionally displays positive traits that align with an antihero archetype. In some iterations, such as FLCL Alternative, she shows a more mentoring and helpful side, guiding younger characters while still maintaining an air of mystery about her true intentions.

Her primary motivation is an obsessive desire to capture and absorb the power of Atomsk, the most powerful space pirate in the galaxy. This singular goal drives nearly all of her actions, from manipulating the emotions of those around her to endangering entire planets. To achieve this, she seeks out humans with latent N.O. abilities, which are dimensional channels that can be used to manifest objects and beings from elsewhere in space. Her role in the story is that of an instigator who intrudes upon the lives of ordinary people, using them as tools to draw out Medical Mechanica's robots and, ultimately, Atomsk himself.

Key relationships are central to her function in the narrative. She has a history with Commander Amarao, a human official whom she deemed a failure for her purposes, similar to how she later uses others. Her most significant relationship is with the young protagonist Naota Nandaba, whom she runs over with her Vespa and then hits on the head with her guitar to activate his N.O. channel. She insinuates herself into his life by becoming a live-in maid at his family's home, toying with his emotions and endangering him to achieve her goals. She also has connections to the Nandaba family cat, Miyu Miyu, which serves as a communications device to her superiors.

Development across the series shows that Haruko remains largely consistent in her core drive, though her circumstances change. After failing to capture Atomsk in the original story, she eventually manages to briefly absorb him, but the experience causes a part of her being to split off, becoming a separate entity named Julia Jinyu. This split alters her appearance, changing her signature pink hair to orange, and she later returns to Earth under the guise of a homeroom teacher to resume her hunt. In FLCL Alternative, she focuses less on Atomsk and more on directly antagonizing Medical Mechanica, acting as a mentor figure to another young girl with N.O. potential. In FLCL Grunge, portrayed as a prequel, she infiltrates a mob-run town by taking over a Yakuza group and posing as an escort to the mayor, all to create chaos and create an opportunity to steal Atomsk.

Notable abilities include superhuman strength and speed, allowing her to dodge bullets and fight against giant robots. Her primary tools are a yellow Piaggio Vespa SS 180 scooter, which can fly and travel through space, and a blue, left-handed Rickenbacker bass guitar that functions as a versatile weapon capable of firing bullets, acting as a rocket launcher, and opening N.O. channels when she strikes someone with it. She can unlock a human's latent N.O. abilities by kissing them and possesses the power to hypnotize weak-minded individuals into complying with her demands or believing fabrications. She also has the ability to consume and absorb the strength of other beings, as demonstrated when she devoured her other half, Jinyu.
