Description
Kana is a Haibane residing at Old Home, distinguishable by her practical and mechanically inclined nature. Among her fellow Haibane, she is the most fascinated by machines and spends a significant portion of her free time tinkering with them. Her primary focus is the maintenance and repair of the old clock tower in the center of the town of Guri, where she works. Kana is drawn not only to the intricate workings of the clock itself but also to the work notes left behind by a previous, unknown inhabitant, whose mysterious presence adds to her engagement with the task.
Kana has a tomboyish personality, often preferring a wrench to more traditionally domestic activities like sewing. Her demeanor can sometimes come across as mean or sarcastic, but her jokes and teasing are generally in good fun, and she harbors a genuine care for the other Haibane at Old Home. She is quick to act and possesses a spirited, driven attitude, particularly once she has set her mind to a task, such as her work on the clock.
Her motivations are rooted in a desire for freedom and self-sufficiency. Kana believes that Haibane work to maintain their freedom and to avoid being indebted to the town, treating their labor as a way to earn what they receive rather than having it given as charity. This perspective is reflected in her views on the crows that can fly over Guri's walls; she argues that feeding them would domesticate them and spoil their ability to live freely outside, a concept that mirrors her own situation within the walled city. In the story, Kana serves as a guide for the protagonist Rakka, introducing her to the town's workings and the nature of Haibane life. She demonstrates a practical understanding of Guri's ground rules, yet she is also the one who struggles most with accepting the more mysterious or magical aspects of their existence, preferring the solid, understandable reality of her machines.
Key relationships include her bond with Nemu, with whom she shares a dynamic of friendly teasing, and Reki, who is an authority figure Kana looks up to. Kana's relationship with the human clock master is also significant, as he pushes her to instill discipline in her work while clearly showing that he cares for her. Regarding character development, Kana is deeply affected by the departure of the Haibane Kuu. While she intellectually accepts the event, she struggles internally with her feelings and is not yet ready to fully understand or face the Day of Flight herself, the event where a Haibane leaves Guri. Her personal journey involves achieving goals for herself, such as repairing the clock, and later learning to work as part of a team on necessary community projects, a shift that begins to manifest in the series' epilogue. Among the Haibane, Kana’s notable ability is her mechanical aptitude and practical mindset, which makes her the resident expert on anything involving tools, machines, or repairs at Old Home.
