Description
Midori is a haibane who lives at the Abandoned Factory, the other dwelling for haibane in the walled city of Glie. Her name means green, and she is a close companion and protector of Hyōko, the leader of the Factory haibane. She harbors a long‑standing grudge against Reki, the senior haibane at Old Home, because of an incident in the past when Reki endangered Hyōko. This resentment makes her initially wary and suspicious of any haibane from Old Home. However, she is not wholly unreachable; she is willing to talk with Rakka when Rakka approaches her, suggesting that she can set aside her hostility when trust is built. Midori takes her duties at the Factory seriously and serves as a stabilizing presence for the more volatile Hyōko, often acting as a voice of caution. Her primary motivation is protecting Hyōko and the Factory community, and her grudge is rooted in her fierce loyalty. In the story, her role is to provide context for the historical conflict between the two haibane nests and to illustrate the lingering pain of past mistakes. Her key relationships are with Hyōko, whom she defends, and with Reki, whom she resents. She also interacts with Rakka, and their exchanges help pave the way for eventual reconciliation between the Factory and Old Home. Midori does not undergo a major personal transformation, but her willingness to engage with Rakka shows a gradual softening of her stance, reflecting the theme of forgiveness. As a haibane, she possesses wings and a halo like all of her kind, and her notable ability lies in her steadfast loyalty and her role as a protector and stabilizing force within her community.
