Description
Lord Gaav, also known as the Chaos Dragon or Demon Dragon King, is one of the five most powerful subordinates serving Ruby Eye Shabranigdu, the dark lord of the Slayers world. He serves as the primary antagonist of the anime series Slayers Next until his demise.

His background is rooted in the Kouma War, also called the War of the Monster's Fall, which took place roughly a thousand years before the events of the series. During that conflict, Gaav was directly responsible for the death of the Water Dragon God Ragradia, one of the four guardian deities. In retaliation, the dying Water Dragon God attempted to seal Gaav's power by trapping him within a human body, mirroring the seal that the Flare Dragon Ceifeed had placed on Shabranigdu himself. This seal significantly weakened Gaav and bound him to a mortal form, though he remained immensely powerful.

In terms of personality, Gaav is brash, headstrong, and ruthlessly aggressive. He carries a sword with him at all times and is known for his contemptuous laughter. He is among the most battle‑loving of Shabranigdu’s five servants, enjoying combat far more than the others. Despite his long imprisonment, he has not mellowed; he remains as cruel and unyielding as ever, though he lost his former interest in slaying the remaining gods.

Gaav’s motivations are driven by a desire for personal power and revenge against his fellow mazoku lords. Frustrated with his sealed condition and his subordinate status, he plots to overthrow the established order. He strikes a bargain with the golden dragons, using the God Sealing Barrier—a magical construct that forces the other four demon lords to stay in fixed locations—to gain an advantage. By exploiting this limitation, he launches a war against the other mazoku lords, aiming to destroy their plans and ultimately usurp Shabranigdu’s position to become the new dark lord.

His role in the story centers on his orchestration of events leading up to the climax of Slayers Next. Gaav sets his sights on the sorceress Lina Inverse after learning that Hellmaster Fibrizo had dispatched Xellos, a servant of the Greater Beast Zelas Metallium, to accompany her. Gaav views Lina as a pawn whose elimination could disrupt Fibrizo’s schemes, and he sends his own minions, including the priest Seigram and the general Raltaak, to eliminate her. He also transformed the golden dragon Valgaav into a chimera, binding him to his service.

Key relationships include his rivalry with Hellmaster Fibrizo, who is both his fellow subordinate and ultimately his executioner. Gaav also interacts with Xellos, whom he attempts to use as a tool, and with Valgaav, whom he corrupted. His conflict with Lina Inverse is central to the series, as he targets her repeatedly. Among the other mazoku lords, Gaav is the most rebellious, attempting to turn against them.

Gaav’s development is limited because he appears primarily as a static, antagonistic force. He is introduced as a scheming and powerful foe, but his plans unravel when Fibrizo manipulates him into a confrontation. After Gaav is wounded by Lina’s Ragna Blade, which cuts away his astral barrier, Fibrizo taunts him and then kills him with a casual gesture, demonstrating the vast power gap between them.

Notable abilities include his immense magical and physical strength, even in his sealed human form. No ordinary magic from the Slayers world can harm him. As a mazoku, he can shift between the astral and material planes at will, making him difficult to engage directly. His true form is a colossal, crimson three‑headed dragon, which embodies his full power. The spell Gaav Flare, which draws upon his essence, is one of the high‑ranking black magic spells usable by skilled sorcerers.
