Description
Filbrizio, also known as Hellmaster Fibrizo, serves as the primary antagonist in the latter half of the anime The Slayers Next. He is a Mazoku Lord, a high-ranking demon, and is recognized as the oldest and most powerful of the five subordinates who serve the dark deity Ruby Eye Shabranigdu. His existence spans over five thousand years, having been created during the ancient Shinma War. As his title suggests, Filbrizio is the lord of the underworld and holds absolute dominion over the concepts of life and death.

Filbrizio typically manifests on the physical plane as a small, androgynous boy with shoulder-length dark hair and pale green eyes, a form he deliberately chooses because it causes humans to lower their guard and underestimate him. This deceptive appearance is a perfect reflection of his sinister and calculating personality. He is immensely cruel, ruthless, and deeply sadistic, deriving genuine pleasure from the pain and despair of others. While all Mazoku instinctively desire destruction, Filbrizio is distinguished by his obsessive, almost exhilarating fixation on achieving this goal on a universal scale. He is a master strategist who possesses incredible patience, capable of waiting for centuries to set his complex schemes in motion. His mannerisms are often polite and marked by a disturbing, childlike dark humor, but this playfulness masks a complete lack of empathy; he views all other life forms as mere toys to be manipulated, tormented, and broken for his entertainment.

The core motivation driving Filbrizio is his unwavering commitment to fulfilling his master’s ultimate objective: the complete annihilation of all existence and the return of the world to the primordial Sea of Chaos. Unlike some of his brethren, his devotion to this cause is absolute and fervent. A thousand years prior to the events of Slayers Next, he orchestrated the devastating Kouma War, intentionally stoking the horrors of a human conflict to awaken a sealed fragment of his master, Shabranigdu. Although that plan ultimately failed when the awakened fragment was sealed away again, it demonstrates his willingness to weaponize global-scale tragedy for his own ends.

In his role within the story, Filbrizzo is the mastermind working from the shadows, manipulating nearly every event in Slayers Next to corner the powerful sorceress Lina Inverse. His ultimate scheme is to force Lina into casting the forbidden Giga Slave, a spell that draws upon the power of the Lord of Nightmares, a being he views as a higher deity of chaos that could complete his work. To coerce her, he employs a diabolical strategy, kidnapping Lina's companion Gourry and later systematically threatening to murder her friends one by one in front of her, displaying extreme delight in her suffering. His key relationships are defined by his power and manipulation. He is feared and despised by the other Mazoku Lords, yet they obey him out of fear of his immense strength, which is so great that he can destroy a fellow Lord like Chaos Dragon Garv with minimal effort. He also holds authority over the enigmatic Xellos, a high-ranking Mazoku borrowed from another Lord, whom he tasks with guiding Lina’s party according to his plan.

Regarding development, Filbrizio remains a static and supremely confident character until his final moments. He is so convinced of his plan's success that he suffers a complete psychological breakdown when it backfires. He never anticipates that the Lord of Nightmares would not act as his ally but would instead manifest her power directly through Lina to protect her. In his ensuing desperation and madness, he attempts to destroy Lina's body directly, an act for which the Lord of Nightmares immediately annihilates him, ironically granting him the destruction he craved, but on a personal rather than universal scale.

Filbrizio’s notable abilities are as terrifying as his personality. As the Hellmaster, his primary power is absolute control over the souls of the dead. He can kill any human instantly by simply crushing a small golden marble that represents their life essence. He can also encase living beings in a crystal that drains their life force and is capable of resurrecting entire destroyed cities, complete with phantasmal inhabitants that are bound to his will, as demonstrated when he recreates the city of Sairaag. In combat, he wields devastating black magic attacks that draw upon his own power, including spells like Ragna Blast and Ragna Drive. As an astral being, he can phase between the physical and astral planes, teleport, and his true demonic form is an immense, monstrous cloud of dark energy rather than the boyish avatar he usually projects.
