Description
Naozumi Saito is a minor supporting character who appears exclusively in the Gantz anime, specifically in its second stage. He is not present in the original manga storyline. Before his death, Saito was a troubled and financially ruined businessman. He had accumulated significant debts that he could not repay, and he was being actively pursued by loan sharks. While at a train station, he found himself cornered by these pursuers. Overwhelmed by hopelessness and fear, he chose to end his life by throwing himself in front of an oncoming train.
Following this suicide, Saito was transported to the familiar Gantz apartment, revived, and forced to participate in the game alongside other recent casualties. In terms of personality, he is depicted as a reserved and formal individual. He tends to approach situations with a practical and analytical mindset, focusing on strategic thinking and logical solutions rather than emotional appeals. He is not initially aggressive or selfless; he expresses a reluctance to fight and harm others. However, as he becomes more immersed in the brutal environment of the Gantz missions, his behavior shifts. He grows more ruthless and aggressive, shedding some of his earlier hesitation and revealing a darker, more hardened side.
Saito joins the group in the final mission of the anime. He participates in the battle alongside established characters such as Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato. He does not form any deep or lasting bonds with the other participants; his presence is relatively brief, and he functions more as a late-stage addition to the team than as a close ally. His primary motivation after being revived is survival, though he lacks the deep personal connections that drive the main protagonists. In terms of abilities, Saito is noted as being a skilled shooter and a competent fighter, using his strategic thinking to contribute during combat. His role in the story is ultimately tragic and short-lived; he is killed during the final mission when he is struck by a rocket fired by Muroto Hajime. His death marks the end of his brief arc, serving as a reminder of the high casualty rate among the Gantz participants.
