Description
Hiroshi Hatanaka is a minor but memorable character introduced during the Onion Alien mission, the first major hunt of the series. Before his death, Hatanaka was a member of the Yakuza, the Japanese criminal underworld. The circumstances of his death are strongly implied to be the result of a violent incident, as he arrives in the mysterious Gantz room with clothing bearing visible holes from gunshot wounds.

In appearance, Hatanaka is a tall, clean-shaven man with a build that suggests above-average physical strength. He is consistently dressed in a purple jacket with a darker purple stripe, brown jogging pants, and black shoes. He is always seen in the company of another Yakuza, Kiyoshi Yoshioka, indicating a pre-existing relationship from their life in the underworld.

Hatanaka possesses a volatile and dangerous personality. For the most part, he is a quiet and composed individual who remains aloof and does not speak unless a matter directly involves him. However, this calm exterior masks a hair-trigger temper. He is a man who feels deeply disrespected by even the smallest or most meaningless of actions, and this perceived slight can instantly provoke him into extreme, merciless violence focused entirely on retribution. When he is in control of a situation, he is ruthless and intimidating, using his status as a Yakuza to dominate others. Conversely, when confronted with an overwhelming and uncontrollable threat, his bravado completely collapses, revealing a cowardly core as he desperately pleads for his life and apologizes for his earlier actions.

His role in the story is that of an antagonist within the group of unwilling participants. From the moment a naked young woman, Kishimoto, arrives in the room, Hatanaka's true nature is revealed. He immediately grabs her and attempts to drag her to a back room with the intent to rape her, only to be stopped by the intervention of Masaru Kato. This leads to a physical confrontation in which Hatanaka, though landing a blow, is subdued by Kato. Once the mission begins, his motivation becomes clear: he is eager to hunt and kill the onion aliens, driven by a belief that Gantz is a game show where violence equates to monetary reward. He shows no hesitation in executing the alien when it is defenseless. His primary relationship with the other participants is therefore one of antagonism and intimidation, particularly towards the more morally grounded Kato. His relationship with his fellow Yakuza, Yoshioka, is one of mutual association, though Hatanaka operates with a degree of independence.

Hatanaka's development is not an arc of redemption but rather a demonstration of a predator becoming prey. He begins the mission as an aggressor, eager to use the Gantz technology to inflict harm. He is the first to be teleported to the mission site and one of the most active in tracking the aliens. However, his aggression leads directly to his downfall. After he and the group kill a small alien, its larger parent arrives. When Hatanaka attempts to confront the grieving father, the alien grabs him and uses him as a human shield. In this moment, the previously merciless Yakuza is reduced to a terrified, incontinent mess, begging for his life. He is ultimately killed not by the alien, but by a teammate's shot that hits him by accident, causing his body to explode. In a final moment of denial, he desperately tries to convince himself that he will survive.

As a member of the Yakuza, it can be inferred that Hatanaka has experience with violence and perhaps firearms, lending weight to his initial confidence and intimidation tactics. He demonstrates physical fitness by easily running down the fleeing alien child. Despite his bravado, he initially does not understand how to operate the Gantz weapon, learning its explosive capabilities only after watching another participant fire it. His most notable abilities are not skill-based but character-based: a capacity for remorseless cruelty and a stark, contrasting weakness in the face of true danger. He is a figure who exists to showcase the violent and unforgiving nature of the Gantz world.
