Description
Kiyoshi Miyafuji is a minor character who appears during the Buddhist Temple Alien mission in the Tokyo room. He is physically unremarkable, portrayed as a skinny man who wears glasses, which gives him a bookish and unassuming appearance compared to other participants forced into the deadly game.

In terms of personality, Miyafuji stands out sharply from the other newcomers summoned to the Gantz room. While many of the other new participants are prone to panic, denial, or blind faith in the explanations provided by others, Miyafuji is defined by his skepticism and rational mindset. He is immediately doubtful when another participant, Musō Tokugawa, begins espousing spiritual theories about the room being a testing ground for the soul’s journey to heaven or hell. Instead of accepting these mystical claims, Miyafuji applies logical reasoning to his situation, noting that they can see the Tokyo Tower, feel their own breaths, and possess cell phones, which contradicts the idea that they are simple ghosts or souls in an afterlife. He concludes that the technology of the black Gantz ball, which can seemingly resurrect people and transport them through thin air, must be a form of advanced science far beyond current human understanding, rather than a supernatural event.

This logical and analytical nature directly informs his motivations. Unlike those who resist the rules of the game, Miyafuji's primary drive is survival through understanding and adaptation. After listening to the more experienced participant Masaru Kato explain that the provided suits and weapons are essential for survival, Miyafuji is one of the first among the new group to embrace the tools given to him. He chooses to don the form-fitting Gantz suit immediately, without the hesitation or mockery displayed by others. Rather than being paralyzed by fear, he becomes excited by the mission itself, treating it as a challenge to be solved and a system to be mastered.

Throughout the chaotic mission at the Buddhist Temple, Miyafuji's role is that of a quick learner who operates independently. He spends a significant portion of the mission off-screen, not simply hiding, but actively training himself to use the capabilities of the Gantz suit. His most notable achievement during this time is teaching himself how to activate the suit's optical camouflage function, which renders the wearer nearly invisible. This ability demonstrates his technical aptitude and his preference for strategic, unconventional tactics over brute force.

Miyafuji's key relationship is with the established veteran Masaru Kato, whom he questions directly to gain crucial information about how the game works. Unlike other newcomers who mock or ignore Kato's warnings, Miyafuji treats him as a valuable source of intel, asking pointed questions about the mission's objectives and the functions of the equipment. This relationship is purely informational, as Miyafuji ultimately chooses to operate on his own terms.

The character’s development, though brief, is tragic and subversive. He progresses from a skeptical, unassuming civilian to a competent and seemingly successful Gantz hunter who masters the suit's advanced features. However, his fate takes a dark turn. During the climactic battle against the massive alien statue known as Kannon, Miyafuji is not killed in a straightforward fight. Instead, it is revealed that he has been swallowed whole and subsequently possessed by the alien entity. In the final confrontation, Kannon sheds its original body, and from its neck emerges a grotesque, multi-armed creature wearing Miyafuji's glasses and bearing his face. In this possessed state, he attacks Masaru Kato with immense ferocity, forcing Kato to kill him in his alien form to survive. This ending provides a tragic conclusion for a character who had shown more promise and adaptability than most of his peers.

In terms of notable abilities, Miyafuji does not possess any superhuman powers of his own. His primary skill is his quick intellect and capacity for learning under extreme pressure. Within the span of a single mission, he is able to analyze the functionality of the advanced Gantz suit and train himself to use its most sophisticated feature, invisibility, without any formal instruction. This makes him an anomaly among the newcomers, as most are unable to effectively use the suit at all during their first mission.
