Description
Haruya Numata is a minor antagonist and a short-lived member of the Tokyo Team during the early stages of the Gantz mission known as the Tanaka Alien mission. He is a 28-year-old man of average height with a thuggish appearance, blond hair, and a notably overweight build. In the anime adaptation, he works as a construction site worker during the day, while in the manga, his primary identity is that of a brutish motor biker who spends his nights as part of the Zoku Biker Gang.

The defining aspects of Haruyas personality are his cruelty, arrogance, and cowardice. He is depicted as a rude and selfish individual with very little regard for the well-being or feelings of others. On the night of his death, he and his gang are shown bullying a father and his young son for entertainment, forcing the child to humiliate his parent. He is also shown to have a lecherous and predatory nature, as he attempts to sexually assault a female teammate, Kei Kishimoto, while she is changing, and is only stopped by another participant, Masaru Kato. Haruya laughs frequently at the misfortune of others and refuses to take the life-or-death situation of the Gantz game seriously. He is quick to turn on anyone, even his fellow biker gang members, and coldly disregards the death of one of his friends. Despite constantly insulting the Gantz suit and referring to it as worthless, he still claims ownership over it and refuses to let anyone else use it. Above all, he is a bully who feels secure only when he has others to back him up, and this aggression quickly gives way to cowardice when he is faced with a genuine threat. He is physically unfit and not a strategic thinker, acting on impulse and brute force without any concern for consequences.

His role in the story is primarily that of an obstacle and a source of conflict for the protagonists, Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato. He is transported to the Gantz room after he and three of his gang members are lured into a trap by a rival biker gang and killed. Inside the room, he contributes nothing to the team effort, choosing instead to mock the situation and harass the other new participants. He refuses to put on his Gantz suit, leaving himself completely vulnerable. During the mission to eliminate the Tanaka Aliens, he avoids combat entirely. His most significant action is when he and another biker, Tetsuo, force Kei Kurono to hand over his weapon and walk unarmed into the aliens lair, intending to use him as a sacrifice. He holds Kurono at gunpoint to ensure his compliance, demonstrating his willingness to sacrifice anyone to save himself.

Haruyas key relationships are largely negative and born of convenience. He is part of the Zoku Biker Gang alongside Tetsuo, Kosuke Nakajima, and Kinji, though his loyalty is shallow at best. He has a brief and hostile relationship with the experienced hunter Joichiro Nishi, whom he mocks and laughs at when Nishi is in danger. His relationship with the protagonist Kei Kurono is purely antagonistic, as he bullies and threatens Kurono from the moment they meet. Masaru Kato, who tries to maintain order and protect the weak, acts as a direct moral foil to Haruya, physically stopping his attempted assault on Kishimoto.

Haruya shows no development or character growth throughout his brief time in the story. He enters the Gantz room as a cruel and selfish bully and remains one until his death. He does not learn from his experiences or adapt to the dangers of the game. His only notable abilities are his physical aggression and his willingness to bully and intimidate others. He displays no real fighting skills, tactical thinking, or use of the advanced Gantz weaponry. He prefers to use his fists and threats, but even this aggression is shown to be hollow when he is confronted with a real enemy.

His story ends during the Tanaka Alien mission. After forcing Kurono into the alien building, Haruya waits outside with Tetsuo. When Kurono manages to escape and the building collapses behind him, Haruya approaches to see what has happened. At that moment, the massive, bird-like Tanaka Alien Boss swoops down, grabs Haruya by the shoulders, and carries him high into the air before ripping off his head. His head hits the ground first, followed by his body, marking a sudden and brutal end to his involvement in the Gantz game.
