Description
Daichi Nozaki is a character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Gantz, having no counterpart in the original manga. He is a young man who, before being brought to the Gantz room, was a wanderer without a job. His death occurred as a result of a selfless act; he risked his life to save a young child from peril, pulling the child from a river or the path of a terrible storm. After successfully returning the child to its mother, he was knocked unconscious by a falling log or piece of floating wood and subsequently died, leading to his arrival in the Gantz chamber.

Nozaki is characterized by his perceptiveness and a strong, grounded moral compass. While other participants in his mission are fixated on survival or their own personal struggles, he demonstrates acute observational skills. During the mission to hunt Kurono Kei, Nozaki is the first to realize that two of the new hunters, the serial killers Muroto Hajime and Kajiura Ryuji, are plotting something sinister against the group. His personality contrasts with some of the more cynical or desperate characters; he appears to have a clear sense of right and wrong, likely informed by the heroic circumstances of his own death.

His primary motivation becomes the protection of others, particularly Kurono. Despite his lack of a stable background, which leads another character, Furuta, to question him—a line of inquiry Nozaki quickly shuts down—he does not hesitate to act decisively in a crisis. His role in the story is that of a supportive and morally reliable teammate during the arc where the Gantz hunters are ordered to kill their comrade, Kurono Kei. He partners with Kurono and ultimately makes the ultimate sacrifice for him.

In terms of development, Nozaki has a limited but impactful presence. He enters the Gantz room with no knowledge of the game, yet quickly adapts to the situation. His key relationships are primarily with Kurono and, in opposition, with the killers Muroto and Kajiura. He forms a bond of trust with Kurono, recognizing him as an ally in a room filled with unpredictable and dangerous individuals.

The most significant event in his narrative is his death at the hands of Kajiura Ryuji. During the mission, after the group splits up, Nozaki and Kurono confront the deranged Kajiura. In a final act of bravery, Nozaki steps in front of Kurono to shield him from a barrage of machine-gun fire, taking the fatal shots himself. As he dies, he imparts a crucial, bitter lesson to Kurono, warning him that the most dangerous element in their deadly game is not the mysterious black sphere Gantz or the aliens they are sent to kill, but the darkness within other humans. This final observation solidifies his role as the group’s moral center, a brief but powerful voice of reason in an environment of chaos and violence. Nozaki possesses no supernatural abilities; his most notable traits are his sharp intuition, his courage, and his willingness to sacrifice himself for another person.
